Comment:
Dr F's honors seminar on poetry in early 1990s was my first honors course and set very high expectations for later courses. Dr F was very interested in knowing how we wanted to learn, going so far as to offer a selection of approaches/methods as well as areas of focus. Group discussions rather than lectures "from on high" yielded great dialogues!

Considering this class is about Victorian Lit., he makes them as interesting as feasibly possible. He is a very intelligent man and knows how to convey the subjectivity of British prose and poetry in a clear and concise manner to the class and tries hard to keep your attention. Two 7 page papers, midterm, and a final. Easy to improve grade as well.

Great English professor. He's the Paul Newman of our generation: witty, honest and brilliant. Take him, you will learn more than you could possibly imagine. Great fashion sense, too.

He was a good prof. Sometimes his lectures were a little dry, but other than that he was good....He tried to invoke class participation, and I did notice a much better grade on a second paper after I started participating...so, keep that in mind...he is a good teacher

Dr. Fennell is one of the best Profs I've had Loyola. He begins every class with a joke. His lectures are clear and his assignments are reasonable and fairly graded. Would take him again for any class. A true asset to the English department.

I throughly enjoyed his class. Although the subject matter was very difficult, he went through it slowly and was very knowledgeable about it. He encourages class discussion and listens to all points of view. I strongly recommend him.

Challenging class. Allows your writing to take a step up, but pleasing the man can be very tough. Expects participation but is patient. Insightful and conclusive. Nothing too out of the ordinary.

Rude, degrading and harsh. Judges a person before knowing them, and does not allow a student ample time to develop. May be smart but is definitely not a people person in the classroom, unless of course you suck up to him or you appeal to him in some way

Very demanding teacher. But does a good job of actually explaining the poetry. Be prepared to listen for a long while.
