Though the class was a dry hour and a half, his ideas and feedback about the stories were fair game for the tests. Not much feedback on those essays though (how about no markings at all). However, if you did go to lecture or are literarily inclined, he has many interesting points.

A really great professor - he never hogs the discussion like some other english professors, and really brought Chaucer and Boccaccio to life - I never knew Chaucer told fart jokes!

Very little feedback on assignments- grades, but no comments on essays! He's also a slow grader. It's a week after our final and he hasn't gotten them in yet. This class sucked hardcore, but he was filling in for Prof. Eller, so I can't blame him all the way. Still, hard to stay awake in this crap class.

I took class in 1994 and I still have fond memories. He taught Chaucer so that it was relevant to today rather than something dead.

Prof. Newman is a great teacher! In Old English Literature, he has taught us so much about culture and language, on top of being able to translate all of those Anglo-Saxon poems. Very light workload but makes you think. A wonderful class and the best professor, it's a shame he's retiring!

Boring. (He must have hated our class b/c everyone else seems to like him.) He kicked a few people out for coming late & seemed both BORING & disgruntled all semester. (Definitely knows his stuff though.)

I purposely took Chaucer with him because I had a great time in Brit Lit. He knows his stuff, and is sweet and non-boring when he teaches. I wish there were more Professors like him at Bing.

I had Prof. Newman for Old English lit., and while I wasn't a great fan of the subject, I found him to be a wonderful, kind instructor. He is always willing to provide assistance to students and is very helpful in class. An amazingly intelligent man!

Knows Old English and recites it! Need more be said? Intelligent, gifted man. You have to respect him for the amount of years and love he's put into the subject. Keeps plugging along and has forgotten more than most will ever know.
