Class is lecture heavy and get ready for a roller coaster ride of information. I am a COMPE and have weak background on DSP. I was able to survived his class by spending lots of time on HWs and attending study groups. Tests weren't too different from sample tests. At the end of sem, I got an A even though I should've gotten a C. Hail to the CURVE!

Fantastic professor, the best. The lectures are inspirational, and he's really good at breaking down difficult concepts to a level which most engineering students will be able to understand. He is also very funny, and tells lots of anecdotes and jokes. Assignments/exams are not that many, and they are also pretty easy (but you learn lots from them)

Incredible instructor. Teaches conference style. You had better know your basics before taking any of his classes. Best Communications/DSP/Software Radio instructor out there. If you pay close attention, you can become an expert. You will become smarter by just breathing the same air he breathes.

Really knowledgable and helpful professor, but can't explain the material well for someone without a background. Read the book and study up on Matlab. Not a good course for CompE students.

Comment:
Took many classes to 1980 from fred. 20 years later, took the multi-rate DSP class and loved it. For someone who had spent 10+ years intensely DSPing on the job, it was quite fun, though fred moves pretty quickly and less-experienced students were quite challenged. Lots of work, but it paid off after I finished the class.

Know your MATLAB! Adaptive Algorithm is very difficult to learn but fred teaches it very well. He is the best of the best in DSP and always available and willing to help you in the homeworks and exams too. Voice record all of his lectures; he provides a lot of good intuitive insights on the fundamentals that you wouldn't find in textbooks.

Very helpful. Person with so much knowledge and fame is still keeping his head on shoulder and keeping himself on the ground. Always available for help. I took number of classes and did research under him. Certainly holding top position in my favorite teacher.

Here I am, 20 years after taking a Fred class and ready to tackle any signal processing problem you can throw at me. Fred Harris is one of the best professors of electrical engineering anywhere, and his positive outlook flows into everything. I wonder if I should move back to San Diego?
