Absolute worst professor I've had in 3 years at IC. Never take a class with him. Pointless. Only talks about himself.

Great professor. I would rather talk about what's going on in the world today than learn how to use the MLA method of writing footnotes. I learned how to put my feelings down on paper. If you take his writing seminar to learn how to write, you should take a remedial writing course. He is a great writer and goes above and beyond to help you out.

By far the easiest class I've ever taken. You have to be really oblivious to fail his class. He definitely rambles but you can bring your laptop to class, he doesn't care if you come, you can write while he talks, choose what you guys talk about in class- talk about your work- as long as you hand in work he's happy. His feedback is really helpful.

Fred was the absolute worst teacher I've had at Ithaca College. He shoves his political opinion down your throat and constantly talks bad about our government. I learned nothing about writing but a lot about homeless people in NYC. All he talks about are his experiences. His grading is ridiculous and unpredictable and he gives no guidelines.

He is an okish dude, but a horrible teacher. Got a C+ on a paper so I went to talk to him about. He skimmed it and said...yea this should have been an A. He's not changing it though.

First of all I think he hates teaching Academic Writing. Second the class discussion ends up being more about anything other than writing. Thirdly he tells the same stories, literally word for word 3-4 times already and seems to have no recollection of doing it.When he asks what your doing in class that day hes not joking, hes that out of it.

He was an interesting teacher. He talked more about "Nam" than any teacher has ever talked about an experience they did not ACTUALLY have. He will make corrections on your paper, and then when you add it in and hand it back for regrading, he'll recorrect his own corrections. I didn't learn a lot about grammar, honestly. OK but a waste of time

Does not teach writing, but politics instead. All his lectures/readings/ discussions are about war and criticizing the gov which is fine except you didn't sign up for that. Learned very little and he did not teach you how to write for college papers, only where to place commas etc. Waste of time.

Adamantly refuses to provide any kind of useful instruction or insight. Mainly reads the newspaper and won't grade your papers. I missed the dean's list because he forgot to submit his grades. Should be fired.

The most infuriating prof I've ever had. Chalks up his lack of structure to half-baked philosophy about alternative teaching methods, when it's clearly his laziness. Gives zero guidance on assignments, minimal feedback, and is literally impossible to reach via e-mail outside of class. Missed final grade deadline despite no exam to grade. AWFUL.

I began the semester wondering what the hell was going on, and I finished loving it. Stick with Fred, and you'll start to really enjoy the class. He's genuinely interested in students' personal stories, not just as a writing prof, but as a fellow human being. He's quirky and can seem crazy a lot of the time, but its a great class.

Utter waste of money. Infuriatinly detached and unhelpful. Refused not only to grade but to even provide feedback or explain why. I do great in all my other writing classes, this guy's just phoning it in long distance. Thanks for reading the paper while I'm paying to sit in your class.

I took Personal Essay with Fred, and as far as really teaching the class how to write personal essays I'd say that we didn't learn very much. He's a very nice professor, and willing to listen and help students, but his method consists mostly of talking about events that happened decades ago. We talked about irrelevant things most of the time.

He cannot teach; he has wonderful stories to tell, but he cannot teach at all. His advice is worthless, and I doubt, despite being a published writer, he understands figuritive language. Quite simply: a useless old hippie they keep around to appeal to those 'out there' types. Avoid like the plague that he is.

People who can't write simply shouldn't be in Fred's class. He's not going to baby you like lots of other professors do; this is college! You're supposed to know how to write, and if Fred gives you a bad grade, it's because writing isn't your forte. I loved hearing about his life, and it helped me be honest with myself when writing papers.
