Comment:
Dr. Munro has the stature & attitude of an Ivy prof. He demands & expects a lot from his students. This course is not easy, but it is certainly not extremely difficult. You will have a ton of work, but you will definitely learn a lot. I would, without hesitancy, take another course with Dr. Munro if given the opportunity. HIGHLY recommend!

Dr. Munro's class is difficult & challenging, but it's doable. Read the books & attend lectures, & you'll do well. His tests are extremely difficult, & you will need to memorize dates, people, & facts. This class is hard, but Dr. Munro is one of the best professors at VCU and you will definitely learn things! 2 exams & 3 papers make up the grade.

His tests are essay tests, usually 5 short answers and 2 essays. If you do not have a good memory, good luck. The questions are very specific to one little thing he may have gone over in class that if you did not write down, you would miss. He does, however, give EC opportunities on the tests. To pass: READ, MEMORISE, PRAY.

Took 2 classes with him including my senior capstone. He takes his courses seriously and so should you. Willing to work with you out of class and is very friendly and respectful. Idk why people complain about the reading, just read. Just read the selected reading that and study, you will be fine. (check out the grammar in the "poor" rated posts")

Out of all of the history professors I have had at VCU Dr. Munro is the most nitpicky and difficult of all of them. His lectures are interesting but his tests and papers are ridiculously specific. Don't expect to pass unless you have a perfect memory. Terms show up on the test that were only briefly mentioned and you better remember dates!

Wish I read the reviews earlier. His grading method is the worst. Do not mess up your GPA and go through a circle of headaches because you chose him. Avoid his classes and you'll be fine.

I really don't understand. I studied really hard, and prepared very well for the exams. I answered all of my questions right, but he still grade me poorly. I asked other students and they all got either D or F. My GPA now is way down. I will never take any of his classes again.

He is the worst. He is a type of teachers that works hard to destroy you, so he can declare himself as a winner. He will give you an F because he do not want you to succeed in your life. Read other posts that I missed when I took his class and you'll know I'm right.

He is the worst instructor I ever had in my entire life. He stick to his opinion, never listen to students, and even if you answer all your questions correctly, he still giving you a C if he is a generous or a D. Do not take his classes

This is the most difficult class I've ever taken. Professor Monro is brilliant mind you, clearly passionate about his field and eager to teach it. His tests however, are mindbogglingly difficult, as they're all selections of terms and names you are asked to define, which if you don't have a crack memory, is a struggle. Recommended with caution.

Very, very difficult. His tests are staggeringly hard, to the point where the class average on his midterm in my class was an F. He speaks clearly and I understand the material, but his expectations are very high. I'm a history major who's fairly interested in the topics, and I'm still taken aback and how difficult the class is

Dr. Munro is a wonderful professor but his tests are impossible unless you are a prodigy. I am a mostly A (some B's) student but struggled to make a C in this class. I love history and I could listen to Munro speak all day, everyday - I did well on paper assignments but failed every test despite all the work I put into learning the material.

This guy does NOT teach. He just talks about random things that aren't necessarily in the reading. His exams are ridiculous and he refuses to curve. 70% of my class got in the 30s on our first exam. Accuses you of plagiarizing from sources you never used. Do not take him.

Comment:
Be careful with this guy -- he's a genius and a mentor if you agree with him, but impossible to work with if you don't. He's experienced and extremely knowledgeable but can also be condescending. I wouldn't recommend him to a friend seeing as he makes the subject matter more difficult than it needs to be a lot of the time.
