McAinsh is amazing. His lectures are like storytime every day. You have to take good notes and study hard - and DON'T skip the reading assignments because he does quizzes. But he is definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had.

At first, I completely hated this class. It took a while, but after I learned to appreciate what he was saying and really pay attention, I grew to love it. Dr. McAinsh is a very funny and interesting man, and this class was definitely worthwhile. Grades are based solely on tests.

I absolutely loved his Contemp. Europe class. It's the reason for my minor in History, actually. It's a hard class, but you get really into it. I loved his lectures.

Completely useless as an advisor and teacher. Shows complete disdain for all but his favorites. Rude, sarcastic and supercilious best describe him. Can't believe he's head of the department.

The only professor I did not like in all my academic years, including 3 other universities. Supercilious in and out of class (except to his favorites.) Acted as if non-history majors taking his courses were a bother, although they comprised a majority of the class. Thank you for creating this site to give new students warning about profs like hi

Great professor with great lectures. Contemporary Europe, England to 1688, England since 1688, and Renaissance Europe are all excellent classes. Little discussion, all lecture. Multiple choice tests are easy. Essay can be a little difficult, just list what you know and you will be fine, even if it is not related to the topic. Highly recommended

Dr. McAinsh is a great lecturer.....I loved learning about English history in his class. He should write a book or something. Also, his tests are fair but challenging; a nice combination.

He is a very good lecturer-- my first intro to him was an upper-level history class I sat in on during a campus tour, and I knew I wanted to take him for something right then. Like others have said, take lots of notes. Maybe even bring a tape recorder. And

I got an A on my first test, D on the second, A on the final, barely earning a B. And he gives me an A. Be prepared to take notes. That's about all you'll be doing in this class. And don't let the easy multiple choice test fool you; the essay test is much harder.

Dr. McAinsh is one of the best lecturers I have heard, both because of his extensive subject knowledge and velvet voice. You need to take lots of notes and know your stuff, but it is definitely worth it. Don't make a habit of being late to class, especially if he doesn't already know you.
