Comment:

Optimizes what a professor ought to be. Cleverly crafts intellectually challenging classes. Witty 'rants' resemble parables, indirectly conveying what is best understood when internalized (vs regurgitated). Structure reveals fundamental underlying concepts. Brilliant, genuine, kind, helpful. True philosopher, exemplar human being. Of cult status.

He is great at explaining philosophical concepts but is a very tough grader, and bases the final grades on about 4 papers he assigns. He isn't that charitable for grading and doesn't give you a chance to prove yourself outside of the papers. Overvold is at times mean. Once, I was late and gave an explanatory note. He cursed at me then and there.

The classes are uninteresting and rarely include any sort of student participation in the discussion. On the papers he will give you a bad grade if you do anything but regurgitate everything that he said about the book in class. I still have no idea what existentialism is despite reading all of the books because he does not teach anything. Terrible

Overvold tries to simplify the philosophical concepts (which are confusing enough) but in the end, it doesn't help. He is a fairly harsh grader but you learn a lot from the class, both about philosophy and his high school days on acid. He does have a very interesting and extensive resume.

Who knows how this philosophy professor with quite a resume could be so humble and unpretentious. My only complaint is that he tends to over-simplify things for his own ease of explanation. Nietzsche's philosophy, work and life were far too down-played for my liking - but I do love Nietzsche more than most. Excellent fashion sense.
