I honestly can't come up with any more bad things to say about this man. The only person who leaves his lectures with any sense or understanding is himself...I think (it's hard to tell). If you're only signing up as a last resort, or it's your only option, wait it out- even if that means taking a semester off of math. He is that bad.

I honestly feel that I have wasted a semester with this instructor. I learned absolutely nothing and his incomprehensible lectures and tests just made it worse. I depended solely on the textbook and my GSI. I'm glad that he will be retiring for any other students won't have to suffer through his class.

I am a Math Major, and decided to take 1B to refresh my grasp of calculus. I had done very well in my previous college calculus course and did quite poorly in this class. Suffice it to say, I am glad this man is retiring and saving future generations from having to endure his incomprehensible lectures and difficult tests.

Lectures are AWFUL. He's so brilliant that he doesn't know how to explain what - to him - are basic concepts. If you take his class, expect to count on your GSI and your textbook. He seems like a nice guy, but he's the worst professor I've ever had.

Even though Professor Bergman isn't a great lecturer, or even remotely good for that matter, he admits this at the beginning of the year. So basically, it's up to you to do what you need to do to get the grade you want. He's a genuinely kind, enthusiastic guy who really loves those Fibonacci numbers and limit laws. Tests and sections are scaled.

He doesn't teach/lecture very well. Math used to be my favorite subject BEFORE i enrolled in this class. Don't expect to get a good grade if you aren't able to grasp material from the textbook solely.

Bergman is very nice and his enthusiasm for math is contagious. But I don't think his policy not lecturing and only having students read the book and ask him questions afterwards really works. I hope he's still not doing this. There is value in having a human explain things that a book just can't.

of course he is very intelligent.. however, he expects the same from his students. he answers questions with a condescending tone and gives off an unapproachable vibe. his homeworks are reasonable and the problems are interesting. the tests are fairly easy, i.e recalling definitions, true/false, one easy proof, one medium difficuly proof

If you like a good lectururer, meaning an organized structured lecture with theorems, proofs, examples, etc. this is not for you. Though i am one of the few who did horrible in the class...the book he uses is very hard to understand and his HWs are very hard as he writes his own problems. Condescending, and not that approachable. on your own,.

Can be a bit cold and condescending. Lectures are mostly superfluous, although the question of the day system lets you get help with tricky parts in the reading. Tests are easy, but grading is particular. Good choice of textbook. All in all, Bergman is a pretty good option for this class.

goes off on tangents instead of teaching material and isn't very clear when he does talk about the material. don't expect to go to lecture often. grading on tests is very nitpicky.. unlike calculus the sections dont relate to each other so you end up learning more material than other classes

Bergman's tests are extremely easy, which is good if you're going for a good grade. But he really isn't a good teacher. I personally like him a lot, very cheerful and friendly, but I just don't understand him. And when you ask him a question, he answers with an even less understandable answer.

He is supposed to "supplement" the book where we are supposed to learn straight from the book (thats how the teaching method is), yet, he is very unclear when it comes to explaining things. GSI (Seth Dutter) is great. Don't count on him to help you out if you can't understanding something.
