I will cite him as my chief influence on my current academic work. He's passionate about his teaching, makes an effort to know you, knows his priorities but will give you his time anyway, and is easily excited about your idea no matter how silly it may sound at first blush. Do the readings though, and give them time - they can be hard to bite down.

Really good! I took Climate Change Ethics with him, a new course, so he wasn't as comfortable with the material as with most of his philosophy classes. Nonetheless, it was an easy course that I still learned a lot in!

George Smith is a genius and 170 proves this. Computers get him emotional; he's always saying things like, "look how beautiful this Turing machine is" and such. But the class is hard. Don't go into it unless you were really good at logic or coming from comp sci (like I did.) The work is both the hardest and the most rewarding I've had at college.

Comment:
Logic - A deep and rigorous introduction to logic. Smith is an extraordinary teacher: he came in for hours of review outside of class every other week and answered every question thoroughly. That said, though the course was excellent, it's not for the faint of heart. If you're up to the challenge, it's definitely worth it. Highly recommended.

Professor Smith is the best teacher I have ever had. If you looking for an extremely gratifying intellectual challenge, then I highly suggest that you take one or more of his courses. (I also took PHIL 170.) Smith is extremely passionate not only about the subjects that he teaches, but also about his students' success in class and beyond.

Legitimately the most intellectually capable person I have ever learned from or met. His classes aren't easy, but you will find yourself putting in the effort necessary to do well, he just has that effect. Amazing

George Smith is by far the best teacher I have experienced. After taking his Intro to Phil course, I took several more courses and an extra major in philosophy just to learn from him. While his lectures and seminars were engaging, discussions in his office provided great insight. Note that it's been 25 years since my last class with him.

Manages to mention his office at MIT approximately 17 times per class (give or take depending on whether he just left from there) and all around brilliant man. 3 hour lectures could caused my suicidal inclinations to peak, but Smith makes it worth it. Willing to help, obviously loves his work. Challenging. Great person.

Brillaint man, brilliant teacher. Looked up to by far more famous philosophers. Very serious about the subject, but with no pretensions at all.
