Wonderful teacher and very knowledgable. I would highly recommend his early Christianity class, I loved it. Hammel is certainly one of the best the Santa Cruz history department has to offer!

This isn't a easy GE history class but it'll do. A lot of reading req, attendance was taken through in class quizzes at the beginning of 8am class. Really hard to go to class and stay awake since it's really early. A page assignment due at section once a week. 1 midterm 1 final. Consists of vocab and short answer essay question. It's doable.

Lectures can be boring unless you're interested in the subject matter. However, he's very passionate about his work and sometimes tells nice stories about his past that is typically tied with the lecture.I showed up at the end of the final when there was only 1 person left, and he let me go to his office (with no surveillance) to finish the test :)

Nobody goes to lectures, they can be boring at times. During he lectures he'll mostly speak using his presentation as a guideline with little class incorporation. Before the midterm he gives you a study guide that covers pretty much all you have to know, save for maybe 3 key terms. Lets you redo the term paper and turn in for full credit! Awesome!

This adorable little old Frenchman bikes up Bay to class every morning in slacks and a knit sweater and then woos you with his accent. Enough said.

This quarter he must have been different than these reviewers have seen him in the past. This time, lectures did not seem planned at all. He even joked in lecture a few times about not being prepared. Seems to be the way of things this year. oh well.

He is an absolute delight! Gildas is a little adorable old professor with a understandable foreign accent and very young sense of humor! I had him for History of Sin, because it just sounds interesting in itself. Though it is, it is really Gildas that makes it interesting. Stay on top of things, it gets a lil boring and harder later in the course..

Gildas was the best professor I had at Santa Cruz. He honestly cares about how his students are doing. If you study the vocab and the declensions, you'll do well. He grades easily on quizzes and he loves to help you understand. He cares about the quality of education, so he'll often go on tangents. Always fun. Always interesting. Take Latin w/ him!

The sweetest person on earth and an inspiring lecturer with refreshing perspectives, especially on something as well-studied as the Bible. Extremely helpful and respectful to students, open to new ideas. He is a historian so has a historical point of view. No tests but three papers which is brilliant and you learn in a better way. Go Gildas!

AMAZING! knows so much. posts lecture notes online. Sometimes strays from his lecture outline so it helps if you take notes from what he says and then look at his notes online later. NO TEXTBOOKS! all the reading is from the Bible or other ancient texts that he puts on his website. Genuinely cares about his students.

Gildas cant teach a large class. He assigns WAY to much reading, and I've taken all of my upper division classes.. Take it from me: a super dense textbook, readings online, it never ends. Worst of all, For this class, he thinks people know EVERYTHING about the bible. It should be a prerequisite. Oh, and when he says a reading is short... its so not

Just WONDERFUL! He knows so much, but he is so humble about it. He would say something like, "But, thet is jest like what I red en buuks," or something of the like in his sweet Brittany accent. Humble and French! Whaaa?! The content of the course was great. This is actually the only course I've taken where I've done all the reading!

boring class, bad accent, lots of reading. Keith my TA made this class worth the work. He's interesting and motivation and totally ready to help you understand the long and crazy lectures. BEWARE its not an easy A, but it got interesting towars the end once things started to connect.
