Syllabus will state that class is not mandatory. Ignore this. Sick or not, he will not help you (even in office hours) if you miss. As an alum, I can confidently say I did better teaching myself from the textbook then wasting my time with his class or office hours.

Glenn Smith is the Oracle. He knows everything there is to know about SQL. As long as you stick with him, don't ask dumb questions in class and follow his rules, he'll respect you. Too bad he's retiring. One of the best teachers I've had.

"My way or the highway" teaching style, no help in office hours unless your female, and don't expect to miss a single class if you want help from him. Advice: Group up with classmates and work together to learn information. He should have retired a decade ago.

The modeling and SQL queries are useful to know. His teaching style is antiquated (ex. no powerpoints) tho. The book was not much help for referencing the material. I think I just failed a job application that had a PL/SQL (procedural lang) question since it was never taught or even touched on in class.

He's a great prof. The material taught is tough to understand, but he does an amazing job of pounding the information into your memory. If you are a CIS major, learning the basics of database are necessary, and Glenn Smith knows everything and anything you need to learn about the database world. Take him if you can, next semester is his last!

Anyone who says Glenn Smith is a poor teacher obviously should not have gotten through COB300. Go back where you belong. Smith is amazing, will help you with anything and everything, and hates on people who don't try (ahem....) so if he doesn't like you, you deserve it. Go to class, and enjoy every minute. Best professor I have ever had.

Acts completely different from db and is very nice and laid back, because the class is not a core class. The entire class is very easy and a good gpa booster.

Horrible teacher overall. Plays favorites and gives them more help with assignments. Very rude and doesn't help during office hours unless you're one of his favorites or you're a female student. His tests are very long (He gives them in the evening) and difficult, but the assignments are managable. The two db projects are difficult as well.Good luck.

Graduated from JMU with CIS major. Had Smith for CIS 430. Can honestly say he did not contribute one bit to my current job as an IT consultant involving specific work with oracle databases. You mind as well teach yourself. Plays favorites (read below). Should have retired years ago.

Plays favorites and it's easy to pick out his favorites. Teaching style is out-of-date and enjoys calling you out if you don't do what's expected (even once). Don't plan on missing a class for any reason (even though there isn't an attendance policy) and don't expect to get help during office hours. Best Bet, find someone who understands it in clas

This class is painfully tedious. Has attendance policy, but no one skips-if you miss one class, good luck understanding anything. Book is worthless, tests are scheduled at night because they take hours, rambles on at an absurd pace in class, then sends you on your way to struggle through assignments. I luckily understood the material, but others

Database is not an intuitive class and you pretty much have to attend every class to keep up with the material. Don't buy the book because he gives you handouts and you can find other info online. He's sometimes funny, but I found the class sucked the life out of me most of the time. The projects are a TON of work.

Smith is a pretty solid professor overall, however the class itself takes a lot of time, especially in the second half. He will contanly tell you not to procistinate, and you should definately listen or you will fall behind. He is pretty helpful in his office and definately wants you to succeed

Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be, I think he is a great professor and if you want to learn a lot he is the teacher to take. Easy B if you go to class and just try.
