I was on the fence about continuing with my English major. I was never interested in poetry, but after this class, I love it now! He makes the subject very interesting and explains all the different criticisms very well. The papers are hard, but talk to him about them. I got a B+ and an A on my two papers. This class helped me appreciate poetry.

Intro to Poetry:Teacher=good guy, funny.Class=ridiculous grading. If you aren't an english major with an exceptional understanding of poetry and analytical "theories" already then expect a C or lower. The classes can be pretty fun, lots of discussion. But the papers will drive you mad,and when you think you have something, you don't,its never good enough

He is a really fun guy, and is very interested in his students comments about readings and tries to engage in discussions based off of those, and not his opinion. However, grading is difficult. If you have not ever had higher level writing and literature classes, it will be a challenge. Just communicate with him if all else fails.

Grading is ridiculously hard. Very nit-picky about the requirements of papers and offers very little concrete feedback...that is, the feedback I can read because his handwriting is so terrible. Requires discussion in class as part of the grade, which I find ridiculous. He's a nice guy, though.

Kill me now. Worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't explain materials (e.g. types of criticism), then expects you to write a detailed paper about it... which he grades like a master thesis. Treated my 211 class like a 611 class. Because of the workload of this class, the GPA for the rest of my classes dropped because I had to work on 211 so much.

You will like his class in the beginning and it will seem interesting. He becomes very difficult as the semester goes on. He is an impossible grader, and makes you use a ridiculous amount of quotes in your papers. Kiss your A/B dreams goodbye if you are not an english major

Builds you up to sweep the rug right out from underneath you. Told me that I had a good paper and when I turned it in said "This just doen't make sense"... He had already said my clarity was good... Interesting, but bad grading.

I loved Brister's class, the books were really good and the in-class discussions on them were fascinating. He's a sucker for quotes, so if you include tons of properly cited quotes from the book he will give you good grades on all the papers.

He told us the first day of the semester that we could get a C on everything else, but an A in participation would earn us a B in the class. I got an A in participation, B+'s and A's on everything else except for 1 C on the mid term exam and he gave me a B in the class. My GPA is lower because of his "false promises"

Papers are difficult because if you propose a thesis similar to anything he's heard of before, he will call your argument "spark notes". I got a B- for a well supported thesis that had no themes, motifs, ideas from spark notes. (I had to check after he made that comment on the grading sheet) Definitely plays favorites, a little too cocky.

He's the best teacher I've had at KU. Tough, but fair, and he'll make you a better writer even if it seems tough at the time. You have to talk in class, though, so be prepared.

Greg is a very smart fellow who has the ability to look at a text from an original point of view. At times he seems almost too smart, but anytime you bring up your point in class he will treat it as just as an intelligent of a thought as anything that he himself has come up with.
