O'Dea is like the quintessential English professor. He's very pleasant, and offers detailed analysis of the texts. You'll do well if you read the materials, and give genuine effort on the papers. Overall, he offers a good introductory course that will improve your writing.

One of my favorite professors of the English department. He is so passionate about literature and will go out of his way to help. Yes, there is a bit of reading though. No tests or quizzes. Only papers--which he grades quite hard. I highly recommend him.

I have taken several classes with Dr. O'Dea--he is, without a doubt, the best literature professor at UTC. You will not find anyone more passionate about his work, or more passionate about his students. Some people complain about having to read-Yes, you must read. You're English majors, you must read. Those are ridiculous grounds for complaint.

I took a class with him after reading the awesome reviews on here. I absolutely love English and writing papers comes naturally, but this class was awful! There is a lot of outside reading and he asks a lot of questions in class. The books were not very interesting and it made it difficult to enjoy the class. You write several papers.

Dr. O'Dea is wonderful. I had him in my first semester of freshman year. He made my first semester so wonderful. He gives you a very clear and comprehensive grasp of the readings that we were assigned, his writing assignments were enjoyable, and his absolute passion for his subject and his humor made the class a blast.

One of the best teachers I've ever had. This page is wrong to make very hard equal to worst and very easy equal to best. You don't learn anything from a teacher who doesn't require you to do anything--that's a really BAD teacher.
