Comment:
Offers a clearly organized syllabus, assigns an level of reading appropriate for a college course, explains the purpose of each assignment and grades based on the stated course objectives. Many students dont expect to have to read in a college course or read the syllabus but if you can handle that, you will get a great deal out of his course.

Professor Brown has good information and is very well spoken; however, his grading is unclear. Each assignment has a different style of grading that he does not specify. He is not on time consistently and fails to show up at times as well. He changes due dates often on short notice.

Just save yourself the trouble and don't take this class, or any by this professor if this class is any indicator. It was by far the most disorganized and unclear course I have taken. The work wasn't too hard, but it was a constant struggle to keep this class organized. The syllabus was not made clear until the class was 2/3rds over. Avoid.

Comment:
Everything was unclear in this class from the beginning, we had a "course calendar" that had assignments that we didn't have to do so it was very unclear what assignments we actually had to do, slow at grading papers and returning emails (didn't even return the first email I sent him). Very frustrating class even though the work was easy.

This is my third summer taking online classes, and this is by far the most disorganized online course I have taken. The difficulty in this class does not come from the material, but the constantly changing due dates, inaccessible assignments, clunky class platform and unclear syllabus. The class isn't over, but the experience so far has been awful

He assigns a lot of reading. Most of it is easy and can be skimmed. Overall, he rubs off as mediocre. He is extremely knowledgeable. However, he has an irritating habit of asking a question and waiting, at times for minutes, for people to answer.

There was no actual "real" textbook but there is a ton of reading on a nightly basis. You are graded on 2 essays (which the rubic is ridiculous), a group presentation and reading logs. He lets you revise at least 1 paper & will penalize you if you don't, even if you have an A in the class.

Not that bad of a class. I actually enjoyed it. Like the previous poster said discussion posts and two papers for the summer term. First two weeks the Popkin book kills you but after that its not too bad.

From my perspective, take this professor online and over the summer. The only work was discussion posts and two papers. However, his required reading is extremely intimidating with around six books. I didn't buy the books, but because I didn't have them, I had to do heavy research elsewhere. I don't necessarily recommend him, but he isn't too bad.

Excellent teacher. I don't understand why people are complaining about him. He expects you to participate and to have the reading done, just like other teachers. People seem to assume that History is all about dates and names, but he expects you to understand ideals and concepts. You just have to be able to think.

I read the comments prior to taking Dr. Brown, now half into the semester I am extremely happy I choose to enroll in lieu of the harsh reviews. His lectures are related in such a huge way to the world today, he does not expect you as in entry level history to remember dates / times, etc. He is passionate, brillant, and extremely willing to help!

This man is such a jerk. He does not care if students learn anything at all. When he asks for imput and it is given he rejects it says you are worng then gives you your answer back but in his words. his lectures are so boring and not helpful. i never know what he is talking about. there is too much reading.

I took Dr. Brown's online class, and maybe it's because the class was not in person, but I didn't find it difficult at all, and I didn't find him to be anything but helpful and knowledgeable. For the midterm and final we just had to write papers, and the weekly assignments were pretty easy. I recommend him.

There are a lot of whiners posting. He's not arrogant. He simply has high expectations. Dr. Brown met with me every time I made an appointment and was very helpful.

Good teacher, and an interesting class. The tests are hard because he requires essay answers on single terms. Many freshmen are traumatized by this class and professor, so I would suggest taking him later in your academic career

I took French History with him, and he concentrates almost entirely on political history... not a well rounded class at all. He's condescending toward his students, and makes sure you know that he's smarter than you. He doesn't care about your opinions, so don't give them. You don't really even have to go to class, just write good papers.

I read all of these reviews after I had signed up for the class and I was terrified, but I ended up with an A. I think these reviews are pretty harsh. He is a great teacher, very knowledgeable, he's accessible and helpful, and I thought the class was really interesting. IT'S NOT EASY though, you'll do a lot of reading/work. But I enjoyed the class.

Very Boring Teacher but the class was easy. If you take good notes and do all of the readings then its very easy. A lot of readings.
