I'm a science major, but as an ex-English major, I found this course enjoyable. There were many short and medium-length prompts and discussions, plus 3-4 longer formal essays. The course was well-organized. The instructor was responsive and helpful. Dr. Hood is a true university professor and she does not baby her students. I loved this course.

I took Dr. Hoods online Lit of Fantasy class (ENG 209). It was very well-laid out and the assignments were easy to follow along with. Every week we read different sections of a book followed by a discussion, a short paragraph, and an essay (2-3 pages). There were a couple bigger analysis papers (5-7 pages) but nothing too bad.

Ridiculous amount of homework assignments for such little points. Really tries to load you down with readings toward the end of the semester. Not a terrible professor but I've had better.

Unless you have a lot of free time, do not take this class. My previous writing intensive course did not have nearly as many assignments, making it hard to find time to do assignments for my actual major. Takes up way too much time.

Dr. Hood is my favorite English teacher! Her class really helped to rekindle my love for English literature and greatly improved my writing skills! She is always available to help when needed and offers great feedback on papers and journals, as well as thought provoking comments. She is extremely kind and understanding. I strongly recommend her!!

What the heck is all this hating about?! Dr H is incredibly awkward, which might mistaken for being rude, but she isn't. Much easier to communicate / her via email. Will do anything to help you get a good grade. Very funny (but dry) in lectures. Could have been easy A if I didn't forget online prompts so much. Take her!

Class should be taught online. Lecture is a useless summary of what you just read. Incredibly impersonal and encourages no class discussion. Won't look you in the eye and won't bother to learn your name. Anyone who attempts to answer a rare question gets spoken to like they're stupid. A PhD in English does not always mean you should teach.

I don't understand why so many people complain about Dr. Hood. She's brilliant, and she puts a lot of effort into her classes. She's demanding, but you should expect nothing less if you're in college -- especially if you're an English major. Thanks to her, I have a new possible focus for graduate school, and I now understand (and love!) Chaucer.

This class could be taught online. You will write papers, but this class will not help your writing skills. It WILL turn into a discussion of real life science fiction "possibilities," by people who think the martians have landed! As another student put it, while all science fiction is based on science. You have to remember it is still IS fiction...

Comment:
Prof Hood is very knowledgeable on the topics she instructs. She is unapproachable and often condescending when she doesn?t agree with students. She goes off on tangents which make the lectures hard to follow. It matters little in education the knowledge that you have acquired if you can?t impart that knowledge to your students.

Does not explain assignments well, gives lectures that have little to do with the assignment, does not like it if you have differing opinions, and does not seem to care about her students. She failed several papers just because she did not like the topic! WHY IS SHE STILL TEACHING?

She knows the subject of fantasy literature very well. She reads prompts, small responses to the readings, before class and uses them to encourage the discussion. She talks at great length about the books storylines at times. She gives point opportunities in participation, papers and prompts.Missing readings on occasion will not hurt your grade.ENG 309

If you are a freshman, take this class. ENG 201H with Dr. Hood counts for both 101 AND 102, and is easier than both of those classes. I will warn you in advance, this teacher is weird, boring, and lectures constantly. But, she gives out alot of As.

Interesting professor. She lectures on the reading, which has nothing to do with assignments. The in-class discussions were usually very enjoyable. She helped students with assignments whenever they asked for it. The essays could be strange but were not terribly hard. Just put forth some effort into the class, and you will be fine.

Dr. Hood expects her students to be adults. If you're not - then don't take this class - it's not high school. This is a very talented and very patient woman with more too offer than Marshall can afford. I'm not sure how they did!

If you do what is required with minimal effort you will get a B. If you achieve some form of proficiency and make an effort in the class you will receive an A. Her classes allow you to focus on great stories from one of several time periods. Although I'll admit that she seems to be from another planet sometimes. But she's cool.
