To be honest, his lectures are boring. They're sometimes a little hard to follow. To be fair, though, he's a really nice guy, will give you an extension if you need it, is a very fair grader, and he's very sweet. He is retired, so he is obviously teaching because he wants to. There is no reason not to take his class.

Overall really nice guy, but horrible class. lectures all day, no handouts, not slides, midterm/final/1 paper. i didnt read any of the books and managed to get a B on the midterm. advice: find a friend to sign you in and switch off with them to rotate which days to come in. class really is a great place to nap/do other work

I turned in my paper 2 days late, took my midterm 2 weeks late, showed up to 4 recitation classes, checked Livejournal during class & somehow got a B in the course. He's a really nice guy, but I learned more in my other classes. Worst thing is that I was really excited about R160! If you want to learn something, take a different professor.

This class is a total blow off, i literally went to class three times, the first day, the first and final exam and to turn in the one paper that we had due. i got a B in the class and that is literally with zero effort. i would recommend it if you like to slack off and dont want to take a class seriously ! haha oh and hes a pretty nice guy too

i am an honor student and history major. I think many of the comments here are unfair. The race class is always hard for any teacher because of class size. For smaller classes he is great and i would recommend him. He has great experience and he is quite humorous. He is also extemely nice and always willing to help and he is a fair grader.

His rambling isn't because of his old age, he really is just a bad teacher with a limited knowledge of the subject matter. Not the type of teacher you'd want to teach something as heated as Race and Ethnicity in American history. Stick to writing books about John Wannemaker.

he is a disgrace to teaching. he is very unclear. his knowledge is very suspect to any student of history. also he gets very upset and offensive when you disagree with him or challenge his ideas. he should be forced to retire immediately or be fired!!

Proves why tenure is a bad thing. The class was so dull, and it's easy to fall asleep. The only learning is done by the student and in short discussion groups. As the other person said, the big lecture is for attendance only. Don't take him.

He has to seriously consider retiring. He has to be pushing 80, and can't teach anymore. The grading is inconsistent amongst the TAs and Professor. The single paper is easily faked, and it's clear people cheat on it. It's a terribly boring lecture of 140 students. Recommend avoiding at all costs. :(

If the class is in a huge classroom with discussion groups, you only show up for the main lecture for attendance. Discussion groups cover everything. It's pretty boring, and a good chance to take a nap or do other class work. Tests are easy though. Skip him...
