I studied with Herbert Beerman in 1965 when I was in my mid-twenties. I was a real tough guy back then, and his abstract-poetic approach to teaching took me aback. I gained some important insights from him, both into my work as well as into myself. Thanks, Herb.

Beerman changed my world. If you're interested in philosophy (love of wisdom) take his class. I was a student in 99 and it changed my world

Prof. Beerman is very sweet, but he is quite simply not fit to teach. He is too old, he can't hear anything and doesn't remember anyone's name. He speaks but god help me he mumbles so much he is sometimes impossible to understand. He takes preference over some people's styles over others but he does give you healthy input.

Many students in my class had a hard time understanding Mr. Beerman, but handful of us found him very interesting, intelligent and helpful. He was one of my favorites at Pratt. I must admit that the class may not be for everyone.. if you are interested in philosophy of aesthetics within your drawing and art, you will love him as much as I did.

There is no limit on what to say about this old gentleman. He is a complete character, and unless you have no sense of humor, you will laugh aloud of all the obnoxious, ridiculous things that he says. However you learn absolutely NOTHING in his class. Recommended for photo majors who don't want to have anything to do with art...

Comment:
This professor had very little insight to offer in technical drawing and his class has no structure. He then demands that different students purchase cretin materials for his class, which you will never use. He also singles out students based on his personal discriminations and treats them badly.

Comment:
He has a philosophical approach to the subject, but I felt like he could have taught us first, and THEN given us the philosophy. Yeah he's endearing, but he has no set assignments, so it's hard to tell how much you should or shouldn't be doing. Critiques practically don't exist. Maybe better if you don't want to do as much work or learn as much.

Herbert Beerman is the professor I remember as having the most influence on the class and to this day i think of him and his methods which blasted all of us freshmen out of our comfort zones as HS class artist . He forced us with humor and prodding to really question and struggle to find a truer expression.

He's a jolly senile old man who jokes, farts, and says odd things. If you like to draw/copy Renaissance-style realistic figures or architectural/perspective drawings, you might get an A/A-. If you are more abstract, he'll show occasional enthusiasm, but you'll get a B/B-. Crits were useless, he hardly looks at your work. Overall, pretty dull class.

he is so funny. this has been my favorite class. he makes this class so fun and teaches without forcing. its so easy-going that it motivates you so much more. he may seem unclear at first but if you aren't afraid to ask you can make this class everything it should be.

beerman's class is amazing. not for those who need to be spoonfed though. thinking is required. very strong color theory, and much can be gained in his class if you pay attention through the many tangents.
