Homer is like your funny grandpa that makes corny jokes at family dinners. You love him as a person, but he's not the best teacher. Also, the final is ridiculously difficult.

Homer is a great guy but an awful teacher. Discussion is part useless jokes and references to opera and art and part useless information about the lab that you already know if you read the lab beforehand - 100% useless. Distracting us during lab with his interest in art and opera doesn't help either. Final is impossible - memorize the lab manual.

HORRIBLE. Took this class because this website said it would be an easy GER. what you 'learn' in class has nothing to do with what you are tested on. he's a nice man, but a terrible teacher. field trip is incredible pointless. would not recommend. don't take this class.

Homer honestly is just not that good of a teacher. He is very dry. The class is described in the syllabus as being for non-majors, people more interested in the humanities. Homer has no skill at keeping a class of people who do not care about chemistry interested. I would not recommend him.

Homer is a great guy. Would make a better grandpa than chemistry lab instructor, though. Likes to talk a lot about opera and art but isn't especially good at explaining difficult concepts, which tend to pop up in orgo lab. Still, labs are easy, you just have to do really well on that tough final to get an A. Final is very tough, study hard

Homer is a super nice guy. The class if fairly straight forward and the test material is very manageable. Lectures fall short though, I needed to consult the textbook frequently in order to fill in the holes because of his frequent tangents and lake of explanation in class.

If youre like me, Chem is not my strong suit. Homer creates the class to be very understandable for anyone, even if you hate chem. 3 tests, 6 problem sets, a term paper. Really manageable. Would recommend for Ger2A. As for teacher, not exactly fun, but easy to doze off. Jokes are really dry. Nice, old man though. Class is easy.

Really nice person. He'd rather tell you about French opera than answer your question though. You have to be patient(which can sometimes just waste valuable time), so it's better to just ask the TA for help. But overall, his humor makes long orgo labs less stressful. I don't think I'd want him for a lecture, but for a lab he's pretty good.

It's hard not to like Homer. His corny jokes aren't in the least bit funny, but he gets points for trying. As far as his teaching, he's below par.If you have a question Homer either misunderstands it and answers something else, or answers it in the most confusing way possible.Don't take this class unless you already know chem well, then you can sleep.

Comment:
Chemistry 103 isn't too bad if you do the reading, do your problem sets, etc. The problem with Homer is that he doesn't actually teach. Instead he floats through class on a cloud of bad jokes that no one laughs at, and almost always fails to actually convey any useful information about Chemistry.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE.........horrible professor. Oh sure, he's a nice guy, but being a nice guy doesn't make you an effective professor. Could have learned more from my old kindergarten teacher...seriously

Do NOT take Prof. Smith's class. His rambling lectures and obscure overhead transparencies have nothing to do with the homework problems. I learned as much sitting through one hour of another chem professor's review session as I did in two weeks of Smith's class.

i wasn't looking forward to taking chem because my dad was making me take it. i think i've grown to like it because of him. you can learn a lot if you pay attention, which is hard sometimes with his southern drawl, but he is very clear in everything he says even though sometimes he may be verbose. do the homework and you will do well on tests.

tests and problem sets very easy (if you read the chapter in addition to taking good notes). yes he has a weird sense of humor, but overall a great class.
