I have taken 2 classes with Hua, she is wonderful. This course had a group project that wasn't worth the percentage it should've been (the exam was 45%). Multiple choice and short answers are her tests structure. Often goes off topic and doesn't notice when class is over. Gives handouts with fill-in blanks that are shown on powerpoint.

Hua is a great teacher. She explains the answers to any questions thoroughly, and never makes anyone feel stupid. She's available outside of class and really helpful. A lot of the subjects in the class are hard for us language-minded children as they're more based on science, but she does a great job of explaining it all.

Hua was very sweet, but her explanations weren't always clear. She also tested our recollection of specific facts about the languages she used to illustrate concepts in class, which I didn't think was fair. However, she was willing to negotiate homework grades, and was very helpful in office hours, which I highly recommend attending.

Can't say I recommend taking this course unless you absolutely have to. She is a lovely person but hard to follow in class. She gives difficult homework, and is tough about grading it. She also tends to be impossibly hard to get a hold of via email or outside of class at all which is frustrating.

Highly recommend this class. Dr. Lin's lectures were interesting and informative. Getting to do our own research was the highlight - getting real experience with the linguistics lab equipment and tools. Fantastic!

Hua is a very lovely lady. She gives out note packages every class and test questions are often word-for-word from the notes. She speeds through important topics and then spends full classes talking about unrelated stuff. Homework was crazy hard as no part marks were given but she is amazingly helpful (even with homework questions) one on one.

Difficult course, a lot of homework, but great prof and well-organized and paced lectures. Its obvious Hua has lots of passion about the subject. She goes off on tangents sometimes, but they are usually fun. Textbook use is helpful but her lecture notes are more important than the textbook.

Hua is very kind and sweet. She does not post her slides online though, so showing up to class is a must and she takes attendance. Sometimes her information is unclear. She often will make mistakes, will own up to them, but takes a bit to figure out what she did wrong. Her lectures are a bit boring, but she tries her best to keep you awake.

Huas lectures are engaging. They are well-organized and well-paced. Attendance is a must because many concepts are counter-intuitive and hard to self study. Hua is a master at explaining them. Her powerpoints were very helpful with lots of animations to bring out the connections of the dots. Will definitely take her class again.

Comment:
Very kind - just can't teach. Lectures are confusing and fast paced, too much so to take proper notes, which is a problem because the textbook is no help whatsoever. Tests from classwork, doesn't post slides. Homework impossibly difficult. Interest level going into this course was very high - this course was depressing and killed my interest + GPA.

Hua is the nicest person ever. Not only is she very knowledgeable, but she is also very human. She will almost be like a mother hen that takes care of you, if you ask her for help. I took three classes with her and I was never disappointed, because the topics and way of presenting the course materials are interesting. Inspirational, loving teacher.

Hua is refreshingly easy compared to some profs in the department. Lecture content is delivered clearly and at a good pace. Don't bother buying the textbook for this class, Hua gives detailed handouts that cover all information. Group project & presentation is easy. Tests are not difficult if you attend lectures.

Hua Lin is kind but not clear. The class was extremely disorganized and stressful as a result. Everyone in it was keen to learn but had trouble doing so. Grades came out high, but we had no idea that this would be the case. The class was not worth the stress. I felt like I learned far less than I could have. Really feared I would be behind in 312.

She is nice, funny and approachable but she's also disorganized, always late and unprepared for class, she wastes lectures and never properly explains concepts. Reads the slides word for word and gives them to you with blanks to fill in. Mindless lectures. 2 midterms, group project and group paper. I don't feel like I learned much from this prof.

Good course, especially for someone who want to do L2 phonology in graduate level but don't have enough preparation before. I have only done introductory Phone before this course and the difficulty of this course is OK for me. The PPTs she provided are very useful, too.

2nd course I've taken from her. No office hours or email. Syllabus very wishy-washy. Lectures the same as introductory level courses and assignments had very confusing instructions. Textbook only used for us to teach the chapters and do a 15 page summary paper. Last course, she skipped 2 weeks worth of classes.
