Had to drop his 'Love' course because of how insipid it was - the same things kept being repeated over and over and I didn't feel like I was learning anything. The prompts for the papers make no sense and he grades rather randomly, favoring the students he likes. He is also very unlikely to answer your e-mail if he doesn't like you enough. Bad.

His Inside-Out course was one of the most inspirational college experiences I've had. His discussions span the contents of the readings/movies to broader world issues. I enjoyed the way he brought together vastly different students and generates interesting discussions. He is definitely entertaining and hilarious, great to talk to personally

Worst Professor ever. He only assigns books written by him and only talking about himself. Arrogant, mean, rude, and his field of study is just hilarious. He thinks he can speaks Spanish, but he only can talk in Spanglish. Not recommended.

Like a previous reviewer mentioned, his paper comments seem more like personal attacks. He is an incredibly arrogant man the likes of which I have never encountered before. He also assigns books that are written by himself, ABOUT HIMSELF. Easily the worst professor I have ever had at Amherst. I wish I could give less than 1 in helpfulness

BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Always makes time for students and is beyonddd helpful when you have one on ones. BEST PROFESSOR AMHERST HAS EVER HAD I wish he would teach all my courses. Very straightforward and knoweldgeable on subject matter. He does call out on students but only to encourage participation, genuinely interested in their points of view

ABSOLUTELY LOVE ILAN! He is by far my favourite professor. Very knowledgeable about various subject matters and extremely helpful both in and outside the class. If I could I would take a course with him every semester. Definitely recommend taking a course with him! Very caring of his students and really has their best interest at heart

Felt like nothing was discussed in depth, always on the surface. Memorizing a page of 100 Years was not useful for anything. Paper feedback felt more like personal attacks rather than paper comments. ALWAYS assigns his own books. Didn't learn anything, except not to take classes with him.

I loved Illan and his Popular Culture in Hispanic America class! A very motivating professor that inspires ideas and thought. Very helpful and makes everyday that you're in class a pleasure. Everyone should take a class with him.
