Comment:
Dr. Abala is very different in her introductory courses as opposed to her higher level classes. She has low expectations for her 110 and 111 courses as many of the students don't read and don't speak up in class. 300 level courses are a stark contrast; she is a ball of light. Good luck reading as much as she does!

Dr. Abala is a tough, yet phenomenal professor. I advise sending her copies of your paper a week before its due, she'll edit it to her standards! Her class made me work really hard, and you get the grade you earn. Definitely one of my favorite professors and will definitely be taking another course with her!

Wake up kids - you're in college. With Dr. Abala, you get what you put in. Engage her, and she will engage you. The woman is brilliant. Instead of being offended that she won't budge on a particular stance, offer support for your side and you'll be surprised at what you accomplish together. We argued in class all the time, and it was stimulating.

Comment:
Abala is not a professor I truly recommend. I am open to teachers values, teaching styles and personalities. She is very inconsiderate from the moment she asks you a question, to the end of your answer. She rolls her eyes, doesn't keep eye contact and doesn't support anything she claims. She will also never say that she is wrong, ever.

As long as you get on her good side and read the books, you should do fine in her class. She definitely enjoys in depth class discussions and will answer almost any questions that are posed. A good teacher.

Not going to lie... this professor is tough. She is very nice and personable, but she isn't always completely clear on what she expects from you. Go to class every day and do the work and you will get a good grade. Skip class and you will certainly fail.

She teaches you how to write a research paper in this class. Not a Fan of MLA but its what she teaches. The Book W&F is boring. She will make you work. If you do you will get a good grade. Play the game people she will reward you!

She grades really hard when it comes to papers but, I found that if you do the paper early and approach her to proof read it she ends up fixing all your mistakes! Then you have two other people in class peer review it and by the time you turn it in, you know you wrote an A paper!

Abala is the by far one of the best professors at ODU in the english department! Though sometimes hard to understand she's a great teacher, grades fair, and is a pleasant spirit and there's plenty of class interaction. She's always eager to know what the students are thinking. WONDERFUL PROFESSOR!

She was difficult to understand, partially because of her accent.. and partially because she would answer your question with another question. the amount of class work was not to hard, but understanding what she wanted from you was a definite task.

She is a fabulous professor with interesting view points to share. If you read the material and share your thoughts (basically what you should expect to do in college), then her class is great! She is a very beautiful lady.

I took this class, and it was miserable. She insisted on going over papers again and again, and I learned NOTHING in her class. My high school English classes were more advanced than this! It was easy, though, because we never did anything.
