I just read that Prof. Cargill is or has retired. Just wanted to wish him well. He was the best history teached I had ever had. Very entertaining. Prior to his class, I had always hated history. He was very interesting and told great stories. However, if you wanted to get a good grade, you had to show up at class and just listen.

[Ancient Near East] Your grade is TOTALLY dependant on three tests, with an optional essay to replace the lowest test score (if your attendance is good enough). Be sure you're good at history tests before taking his class. That said, he's not a bad teacher; his rules make sense, and lectures are okay. No online notes, though.

Dropped this class after a week. Can't tell you what the tests are like but I can tell you that he's soooo boring and extremely unclear. Rambles on and on and you have no idea what he's talking about. If you're not bored, you're frusterated. Don't take unless absolutely neccessary.

I really do not see how anyone could not like this guy. His 200 level or below classes he gives you the answers to the exams for crying out loud. He is a good speaker who knows his facts and can get them across. Plus, the only reason why he is "anal" is simply that he wants to be fair and give you the grade you deserve. I am currently taking two classes with this prof. ancient near east and ancient greece...he is the most boring teacher and nothing what he says is on the tests...he reads poems to bore you even more, he does give you a study guide, but its 100 term. Nothing but 3 test grades..AVOID THIS GUY IF YOU WANT TO GET A/B'S

I don't see how some people think his classes are so hard. I have had hime for two courses and have aced every test. The study sheet is a gift, and he even gives you a hint on the essay part of the test. I have talked to him on several occasions and he is very responsive and helpful. I consider him to be one of the best professors I have had.

This guy is ridiculous.The tests are horrible, I'm a Junior history major and this is the first history class I've had multiple choice exams in.The study sheets are terrible too its 96 ids, thats not a study sheet its a book.The class is unbelievably boring, avoid this guy never take his classes ever.Tests are impossible,boring classes, avoid him.

I took Hellenistic World, a course he doesn't teach very often. Frankly, I thought that class was rather easy. Sure, I had to read several texts, do a research paper, exams, etc., but his grader and himself are pretty laidback with grading. I just studied my notes for the exams. He was pretty fast in responding to emails.
