Great lecturer. Atypical Macalester Professor with amazing CV and life experience. Very supportive of your own ideas and independent projects for People and Cultures of Mongolia as long as you are dedicated/interested in Mongolia. He's a great lecturer - lectures are intriguing and well-delivered. He's fascinating, and personable, in a confrontational kind of way. The problem is that his assignments are vague at best and incomprehensible at worst. He never explains what he wants, and grades extremely harshly when he doesn't get precisely what he expects. Impossible.

Very disappointing. On the last day of our class he revealed that he had been grading our work on criteria he had never discussed in class or the syllabus, for instance, poise during presentations. I still respect the man as a researcher and, hell, adventurer, but I'll never take another class with him.
