Comment:
He gave my entire class a speech he seemed to title "What makes you think you're so god damn special?" after someone was looking at their laptop while he was talking. Rude, arrogant, and yet seems to be treated well by admin b/c he also works for a government board that actually ironically oversees the quality of uni education. Even rude one on one

Compton is not clear at all, as another student points out his lectures are cryptic. Even if I had the enigma machine I couldn't decode his speaking. This is a poor representation of the quality of teachers MIT has to offer.

If anyone wants to find the biggest flaw in MIT, just look at the work load in this course and compare it to other 4000 levels. Prof. Compton, while smart, is an ineffective professor. In contrast to the other 4000-level courses, his was dull and demanding. Going to his office hours for guidance on a 5000 word term paper was useless.

Too into himself. Standards really high. Lectures really great and organized, but marking is extremly hard. Not approachable. Hard to relate to unless you think EXACTLY like him.

I think anyone who gets Compton over Blackmore is going to be bitter. I didn't like him at all and when I found out I could have had Blackmore...oh a single tear rolled down my cheek. Compton is most def a first year MIT ruiner.

I took this class in my first year as an MIT student. I'm in third year now and am still bitter about how he ruined a class that should have incredible. Yes, I know he'll never be a Blackmore but did we really have to read "Inside the Sports Pages" while every other MIT student got to read "Maus" and "Batman"? MIT Ruiner!

Straight Outta Compton! but unlike the classic NWA tune James Compton aint got no rhythm yo, honestly think Ben Stein meets Willie Shatner, kind of a smoke and word version of Marshall Mcluhan's writings smattered with the most cryptic teaching of post-modernity i've sat through. Oh! And Guess What! cause i'm sure he'll mention it, he's loaded!

Really is a nice prof, and even though he is a bit miserable, if you approach him sideways, you may see a spark. VERY hard tester but overall an intelligent and apt prof. There is a softy in there..talk about anything music realated and he opens right up. If you are thinking of taking his class, make sure you are ready to READ EVERYTHING. B+

Whatever aptitude he may have as a scholar is betrayed by an absolute permeating miserableness that seems to be the personal result of teaching lower year undergraduates. Put plainly, I have never, in three years at the school met a single person who has had one positive comment about him. It's depressing how terrible of a professor he is.

Very intelligent man, very poor teacher. This class is very interesting but unfortunately Compton makes it painful. It felt like i was going to church and he was preaching. Just a warning...he's always right and you're always wrong! However if you make the effort, you will learn a lot.

A bitter man -- not interested in teaching -- watch for his classes to be cancelled if they are not prereq's. STAY AWAY at all costs.
