James Goff is very passionate about what he teaches. The class shouldn't be hard if you watch the films and do the readings. Regarding attendance, if you attend every class you get three points added to your final average. Would recommend!

I immediately loved Professor Goff. Hes very genuine and he has an old sense of humor. His lectures can be a little dry but its not too bad. He definitely knows his stuff and can relate it to the class easily. Youll have to do some work but overall I would take Goff again.

This class was incredibly hard to be a gen ed. He talks the entire time, but its hard to know what he's even talking about. I do not recommend unless you love/know your history. The tests are hard, and you have a short time to complete them. Don't take this class unless you're ready to read and watch movies all semester.

Dr. Goff was an excellent professor. I loved listening to him in class and his lectures were always interesting. His syllabus and handouts were clear cut on what you needed to do. He was a very fair grader and was also willing to help whenever needed. Out of all the professors at Appalachian State, he has been my favorite.

Dr. Goff is truly a great professor. Class is very laid back and he loves to facilitate some interesting discussions. Some would say that he his boring, I would say that he is traditional. I love his style of teaching and his expectations out of you are crystal clear. Even though he is the Department Chair and is very busy, he always makes time.

Goff might be my favorite professor in the History department. His lectures tend to be long and he has a very smooth southern voice that could put anyone to sleep. But the information is very interesting. He is an incredibly nice guy, and very willing to help. I have taken him twice and would absolutely take again. Not hard to pass. Just show up.

He is HORRIBLE AND BORING. You have to do a 60+ page journal and DO NOT WAIT TO THE LAST MINUTE TO DO IT. Work on it every week, trust me. I never went to class and it really hurt me. He takes off up to 4 points on final grade for attendence but adds points for going to class. All you do is watch movies and take tests on stuff you never learned.

He posts everything from class on ASUlearn but attendance is key because he will deduct points from your final grade after a few absences. There are few grades and the tests are a little difficult but he is a nice man interested in what he is teaching you. This class is doable but challenging.

Professor Goff is a good teacher in my opinion. Everything he goes over he posts online so you can just print them out and take side notes on them. I did well in this class. Its not hard if you do the reading. A lot of the exam questions are off the readings and the films that you watch. Attendance is mandatory if you want to succeed.

Dr. Goff was an extremely difficult professor. There are three tests the entire semester and a final. Aside from these grades the only other graded project is a journal project. My journal project ended up being 64 pages front and back. Tests are hard and Dr. Goff is very unclear in what he wants. Stay away...

Dr. Goff is a nice man, I personally did not like this class though. It was very hard for me and the tests were extremely difficult. You have to read a lot, which I didn't so that was a mistake I made. I like that we watch a lot of films in the class. I didn't like the journal project, it took forever to complete, don't wait till the last minute!

Dr. Goff is scatterbrained, easily distracted and brilliant. The tests are hard. He just rambles on and on the entire class about things that aren't relevant to what you are talking about at all. He has no qualms about holding you over sometimes almost 5 minutes. DO NOT wait till the last day to do the journal project. You'll regret it.

Be aware when you take this class with Goff you are actually taking "American HIstory through Film." You will eat, breathe, and sleep historical films. Also, he assigns copious amounts of reading, and I'm not sure if anyone actually does it. He provides great materials, but he himself rambles and can be obsessed with his own opinion.

Nice guy but very hard for gen ed. Would ramble about one topic for a day that would be one question on the test and since he rambled didn't have time to talk about everything else on the test. READ EVERYTHING (books, handouts) and take through notes in class. Also don't wait till the last minute to do journal project, takes longer than you think.

Tests are really hard, and he requires a LOT of reading. Attendance is mandatory. If you miss more than four days, he starts taking points off your grade. Don't take his class unless you already have a good understanding of history.

Dr.Goff was absolutely amazing! His class helped me clarify my major. Yes, you must read the books and study, but the film portion is such a neat spin on history and he's very knowledgeable in all areas. Write your journals, read and you'll ace it! :)

Don't take this class unless you already know American history, rather well and don't mind watching some movies, and reading really bad books. One book is like reading facts for 400+, talk about interesting. He also rambles about a lot of things, and the tests are premade, so he doesn't really have to teach, you should just know.

Respectable man and not an incredibly difficult class. Very unclear on some topics and class is extremely boring. Tests are difficult and require a deeper understanding of history. Not a good class if you want to learn actual history. But, if you're in to watching historical movies, this class is for you.
