Super friendly guy, one of the nicest professors I've ever had. Unfortunately his class structure is all over the place. If people fail to participate he gets angry and lectures you on the importance of participation instead of the class material. The outline for the class was never actually discussed much, and the paper was a lot of work.

Took him for Court Systems & Probation and absolutely loved the class. Had power points available on Blackboard. Gives very vague/ broad topic study guides for test. He's one of my favorite professors.

Doc can be a tough professor sometimes especially if the class as a whole does not participate much. He expects you to read the chapters before class and he wants to hear your opinions. He truly cares about his students. Some really like him and some really dislike him.

I love Doc. He is so caring about his students! He tells stories that actually teach you, if you pay attention. The major downfall with him is when people take him too seriously! He's sarcastic and hilarious and willing to help you in any way possible. Just don't take him too seriously or you won't understand him. He also has great connections!!

Overall, I did not mind taking this class with him. He was not always clear with the information, so some things were rather confusing. If you do not have a book, you will not pass the class. Tests were very hard. Participation in class in a MUST for this professor; no participation very little learning.

Houlihan has a lot of experience in the field so he has great real-life stories and can answer any question you have about Criminal Justice. Sometimes, this effects what we get done in class so you have to do independent studying, but he gives you study guides a week in advance that are pretty much the test. Volunteer in class and he'll love you!

Every day, Doc showed up 5 mins late, complained for 20 mins that students had no direction in life, wrote ONE term on the board, then expected students to teach the class for him. If nobody spoke, he just stood there silently until class was over. I learned nothing from this class. Nothing at all...

Personally know and attended classes. He tells stories, he tells crude jokes, and he tells us the requirements to pass. He does these things not for a power trip or to be rude, he does it to open up the class so they will joke, participate, and talk with him. Anyone characterizing his teaching style as anything else is JUST PLAIN WRONG.

Comment:

People who say negative things about this man don't understand the concept of interactive clases. They also don't understand what a dry sense of humor is, Doc means nothing by it! He's a sweet man. He cares about all his students and is just trying to make class more fun than listening to a boring lecture. Respect him and he'll respect you!
