No final exams, only essays which are easy to do well on (always gives 10 days extension period), good sense of humor, respects students' opinion, gives easy pop quizzes which are merely there to raise grade and show that you paid attention (answers in lecture notes), always well prepared for class, very friendly, great office hours

JOY is a funny and super chill professor. For each of our essays, he gave a 10-day extension with little to no reason which was a huge help. His quizzes are pretty easy so long as you pay attention in class and go over your notes at home. He engages in discussion with students in class and always seems to have the answer. Pop-quizzes are the only -

Great Prof. Not dismissive of students, and engages in conversations to help make topics more clear. 15 POP QUIZES which he takes the best 10, and 4 papers 1500 words long.

Average prof, did not really sell me on philosophy at all. Got caught up in discussion too much and went over our time a lot. Very respectful though, never saw him dismiss or mock students, always calm and engaged. Easy course to just sit through and churn out four short papers.

I really enjoyed this class. Prof. Young is very knowledgeable. He encouraged class discussion and questions. He was also very organized, and made his lecture slides available ahead of class. Evaluation was primarily based on two essays, so don't take this class if you don't like to write. He also had a pop-quiz every week or so.

Good guy, he was very clear and patient when he was teaching you the complicated philosophy stuff with his detailed notes. Also provide lots of help outside of lecture time. Come to class and keep on track, because there is lots of surprises quizzes and he expects you to have deep understanding of philosophers and deep thoughts in your essays.

Can express even the most difficult ideas simply and clearly. The extent to which he managed to organize the material and keep to this structure to the very end was truly admirable. Lecture is well worth attending as you cannot parse the material as well without his guidance (aside from the fact that attendance is mandatory due to pop quizzes).

Great prof. Extremely knowledgeable, but is still able to simplify ideas. Quite funny, lectures are quite long but stay interesting. Not strict on essay due dates.

Super clear in what he wants, what will be on quizzes. Cuts through all the BS. Good teacher, good dood. No need to do the readings in phil 100 so long as you take notes and pay attention. Sometimes he spends too much time humoring students dumb ideas.

JOY is a good professor for the course. He is quite funny and his lectures are long but can be enjoyable. That being said, with his grading scheme you really have to know what is on the quizzes. THEY ARE NOT ALL EASY. If you know what is going on in class then you will be fine. Also don't leave the essays till the last minute

Really quirky guy. Has a Monty Python type sense of humour (which complements the topic of philosophy quite well). No tests, only papers so it's a really worry free course. His lectures can be a little boring sometimes, but he does his best to be funny and hold your attention.

Dr. Young is an awesome professor. Got me really interested in philosophy and am now looking to major in it. Just make sure to go to class and get engaged. From what I've heard about the other philosophy 100 courses, this is the easiest to get a good grade in. 15 really easy quizzes (5 worst removed) and 4 essays.

Very helpful and easy going guy, he truly wants you to do well in this course. You have to take many notes in lecture. Quizs are easy since they are based on everything on the notes. Both Joy and his TA would like to help you with your essays. It's possible to get an A or A- in this class. Want an A+? Unless you are an outstanding essay writer.

Thankfully, this course is now only half of what was formerly Phil 310, a strenuously boring class that was a requirement to graduate from a UVic BA in Philosophy. Bring two triple lattes to class. His dire warnings that he would recognize secondary sources in your work suggested his own reliance upon them. The opposite of inspirational..
