Jan is amazing. He's so smart and funny. i just love his style of teaching. He teaches very deep and obscure concepts in the critical theory class but his teaching has always been crisp clear. He also gives an unusual "effortless" vibe while teaching, which deeply fascinates me. Totally recommending him.

I was to surprised to find so many negative comments here, but I can understand this. Jan's style is entertaining ("mindless pulp"?) but difficult (mind = pulp). However, he was never disingenuous or jargoney. I even felt that just by trying to follow him my mind stretched. I still look back at my notes from his class. Also sexy.

I think Jan was great - I had him 2nd sem of first year German and was interested, looked forward to class, and learned and retained a lot more than I did first semester. Since I had a different prof for the class first semester, I think I can safely say that Jan isn't actually easier. He just makes class much more enjoyable, fun, and memorable

jan is a genius but acts like he doesnt want to work very hard. ger110 was a joke. lit had a phenomenal syllabus, but class discussion was NOT guided much and turned into a huge session of english major academic wanking. it was frustrating, and i did not feel he countributed what he could have.
