Great Professor. There is one thing in common with students that don't like Jay. They are students with no aptitude or future in broadcasting. It's typical for lazy, unskilled students to dislike Jay because he makes you work hard and work in a professional manner. Students that dislike Jay turn in subpar work and refuse to act like adults.

Jay Burks is by far the meanest, toughest, and strictest professor on campus. His tests are impossible, he expects WAAAY too much from labs, and everything he teaches is outdated. He should've been fired long ago, this is why you don't give professors tenure.

If you are taking this class, be prepared for a hotheaded businessman. I'm out on my own job now and the way he treats you is NOT AND I REPEAT NOT how they treat me in my workforce. His lack of consistency and effort towards scholarly learning in terrible. If you take his class... Well all I can say is good luck.

When I first met him he was a great guy advising wise. Fortunate enough to have Tom Young as my main advisor though in the beginnings of going here. I do not like Jay one bit because of Video 2 class. Outside of class he was also in his moods.. somewhat. If broadcasting is your major, he might make you think twice about doing the major for sure.

Jay is and always will be a hard teacher, but he is a great guy outside the classroom. During my internship, his methods of radio/tv helped me become successful and I was offered a job from the station I interned for thanks to Jay.

Well, He is very tough on students. Also shows no consideration for them. If I didn't understand his explanation would be "that's just how it is" and would move on, overall, teaches what he knows, but knows very little about audio and much about video.

Jay truly knows what he's talking about. He treats things like its the real world. He may be tougher on you, but after his class, you truly understand the aspects of the industry. The only people who hate on him are the ones who are expecting the easy teachers they're used to. Don't complain about his attitude, respect him and he'll respect you.

He is a JERK. I have been doing RADIO/TV for 4 years .. and I have always wanted to do TV as my career ..but since having his class I am slowly changing my mind. HE NEEDS TO RETIRE !

"He doesn't give us study guides." "He counts you absent if you're even 1 minute late." Welcome to the real world, kids. I didn't like him either, but he made me a much better student. He teaches TV, which we joked meant "too vague". Stop crying and do your work.

Unfit to be a teacher. The state stopped giving state funds to VU because of the amount of drop outs in Broadcasting alone. Jay blames the students when clearly all the low scores are from his class. I have to take the 180 class again because of his poor teaching. Granted he is very knowledgeable just can't teach at all.

Jay is firm, easily irritable and belittles students as well as intentionally throws them off on tests and quizzes. If you wanna pass this class, Advice: 1)Always show up for class 5 mintues early. 2)Never challenge Jay. 3) Take notes and study ahead. 4)No opinions and be quiet-My opinion is that the broadcast department is failing because of Jay.

I had Burks for 4 classes at VU ('06-'08) He's very knowledgeable, but can't get over whatever it was that made him such a bitter hate-filled man. Why is he still teaching? Unfortunately his negative attitude far surpasses anything good he could offer students.

Loves to take time out of class to belittle students in front of everyone. Has no heart or interest in students. Once went on a tirade about how terrible the Post Office is and they need to have lay offs, I then told him my mother was a post master and he said "well maybe she should work harder." He is a horrible horrible person.
