Comment:

Mr. Hammond is the best teacher - in an academic setting - I've ever had! I took his US History classes in 1983-84 (US History 101 and 102, I believe were the titles) at El Centro College (not Brookhaven), downtown Dallas. I now teach US History in a high school in China. Everything I learned about teaching, I learned from Mr. Hammond.

Prof.Jay Hammond is one of my great professors. I didn't read my text book, but I read atleast 15 great books in history. The more I do research the more points he would give, that was his way. Without researching in history and reading newspaper students couldnot get good grade. Those who call him eccentric doesn't understand him well.

I have to agree. He is unorthodox, eccentric,..etc..etc..etc! I did learn more from him than from any other prof. And i dont just mean subject matter material. Im talking about so many things rolled up into a nutshell that makes you come back for more.

Took him several years ago over the wintermester, and it was great. Hardly any work, mostly discussions, and we took a class trip to see Amistad when it came out. It was a short class, but we did learn stuff. No pressure, tho.

You have to understand that Professor Hammond is acting like a hardass the whole time until you get to the drop date. If you stay in his class until then you are purdy much given a passing grade. His assignments are off the wall odd and he does not require you to purchase a textbook.

I learned more in this class than any I have ever taken. I normally get A’s and B’s, and although I ended up with a C in this course, I have a profound interest in History because of it. He makes the class really interesting and fun. I would recommend this class to someone who finds more importance
