Jean is an excellent teacher. The perfect balance of difficult and nice. She almost never gives fully positive crits, but her advice is given so respectfully and is based on such clear understanding that you never feel like she's disappointed. I started the class with zero understanding of paint and color and now I feel adequate. That's amazing!

I love Jean! She taught me everything there is to know about perspective. Jean genuinely wants to help and tries her best to leave you with the skills you'll need for the future. Whenever I tell people I have Jean, they all light up and tell me how much they loved her class. I'm hoping to take some of her classes in future years.

Jean prepared the class with slides&guided assignments that mixed both conceptual and technical. But, sometimes she would be too easy on crit on work that was done last minute. Crit was always helpful (more concept than technical). I wish she gave us more guidelines for Drawing 1st semester since we're supposed to be learning technical stuff.

she is great. i had her for sophmore painting. thought she was too loose in her class. then i t.a.ed for her, and realized how amazing she is. had an independant study, and made tons of progress, then t.a.ed for her again. Jean is great!

Comment:

Jean designed a great class in the Illustration Dept. on Mural Painting. It was well organized, with lots of slide examples of professional mural work, and it got RISD students out of "the bubble" and into the community painting murals. I would recommend her class to anyone in the illustration department interested in public art.

Really, I don't know what anyone on this board is talking about. Jean Blackburn, while she was no Tom Mills, was extremely helpful and an educated woman in the field of drawing. A perfect mixture between self exploration and recieveing straight up technical skills. She gets my seal of approval.

Jean wasn't clear about our assignments. And would contradict herslef in our critiques, one week she'd love it, the next week, she hate the SAME THING. Hard to please unless you catered to her whims. Doing good as dept. head though.
