He is very scattered and too fast while teaching. For example he'll write on the left of the board, then the right, and before you have a chance to copy down the notes, he'll erase the right side and write over top of it, while the left side is still there. This class and the material is straight forward, but he makes it seem more complicated.

If you REALLY want to learn economics and don't care about your GPA, take this class. Lectures taught to a graduate level of difficulty and assignments were soul crushing. Textbook was useless. PASS and Tutorials are MANDATORY in order to understand class and assignments. Tests were difficult, extreme scaling. As a prof: Excellent, just demanding

By far one of the best profs at U of C, and you will learn a ton (which is absolutely helpful if you're carrying on to higher Econ education) but yeah, it's not easy. However, he actually does give you almost all of the answers to the assignment q's, you just might have to root through the lectures/D2L handouts/textbook (& answers at the back)

One of the best profs I've had. You have to engage with the lectures and support materials in order to do well but the grading (while curved, so raw scores can look scary) is fair. The lectures are enthusiastic, interesting, and have real world and current examples. If you're pursuing economics taking a course with him is a no brainer.

This is a weed out course. Extremely low percentage class averages, curve is student vs student. Sink or swim tactics because you cant turn to the book or lecture notes for the 100% application you are graded on.

Yes you will have to work harder in his class but its worth it. His assignments are brutal hard and long but they set you up for the material. Midterms are fair and he curves them. I believe all econ majors should take him once, he will make you learn the material. I will say though, the textbook was useless. PASS sessions are a must also!

I came into this course despite reading all these scary reviews. If you wanna do well in this class, find smart friends, form a group, work together through Problem Sets, BUT make sure you know what your doing, go to PASS sessions, record him during lectures and review what he says. Memorize and understand definitions and examples he uses in class.

No, real world examples are given in this course. In fact, no steps, no procedures and no examples are given in lecture. Worst is that the exams are all about the application. Relief is the feeling after finishing the final, relief it is finally over!

Church teaches this course as difficultly as possible. 0 lecture slides-0 resources-literal chaos. Truthfully I have never walked out of a final exam so satisfied. Survive the stressful nights, his method of teaching develops an unparalleled understanding for economics-EYEOPENING how applicable it is . Most valuable class+prof in my entire degree.

Economics is a fun and intuitive subject - unless you take it with Dr. Church. Success in this class depends on attending tutorials weeks before you learn the material, teaching yourself from the textbook, and reading the illegible. My good grade in this class is despite the prof, and not because of him - please save yourselves from this and drop.

Terrible professor, does not provide any useful information in lectures, just theory that is never applied. Long assignments, harshly graded (30% average on first assignment, 50% on second), writing is borderline unreadable, just overall a terrible professor, I will never recommend anyone take this class unless u enjoy suffering

Answers to labs are incorrect which becomes problematic. You have to guess at what he assumes as well. That is poor teaching. Cant read his hand writing, very problematic. Teaches theory only, but what you must know is the application from labs. Teaches to find one brilliant student who can guess what he is thinking.

At first I was very intimidated by his Econ 301 class, the assignments are very long and worth a low percentage, the midterms cover a lot and I didnt do well in the first half of the course. However if you put the work in and go to class you will understand that Dr. Church pushes you for the reason that he wants you to succeed.

If you believe not explicitly explaining steps/procedures, not giving any examples in lecture, not providing tools/resources, or appropriate learning feedback is good teaching, then this is the right professor for you. After this, you will change majors.

Does not provide the resources to succeed in his class. Specifically, does not teach or explain required steps and procedures. The book doesn't either. Labs are extremely high difficulty and you aren't given tools to solve the problems. Doesn't provide sample exams. What is worse is that this course requires doing multiple problems to learn.

One class I hated going to. Makes everything harder then needs to be and to top it off, his writing sucks. You thought Econ 301 was hard, but take it with Church and its impossible..
