Balmuth washorrible, really bad. He was likely the worst professor I had at Colgate. He started yelling at me when I went to see him for office hours, said it was clear and that he would not teach me. He also was quite rude, he said my character and attitude were suspect. Thought he was brilliant but never delivered substance.

A fantastic professor, who you'll be glad you took classes from years later. You need to do the reading, and you need to care about what you're learning, otherwise don't take his classes. He is a wealth of knowledge and will push you to expand your own. If you want to push yourself and grow during your time at Colgate, take a class with Balmuth.

You go to Colgate to be taught by guys like him. If you're not ready for an intense intellectual experience go to another school.Everyone who goes to Colgate is smart enough to achieve. Wait until Balmuth's critics get in front of their first boss in real life. Thank God he prepared me.

horrible western traditions professor and especially intimidating for freshmen. he's incredibly, incredibly smart and can be really helpful, but it's really hard to take a class from the guy who created it. do ALL of the reading, participate in class, and meet with him, and you can probably pull off a B in the class.

He's a professor that knows his stuff and is not afraid to call on you. Very intimidating in class, but much more approachable and helpful in his office house. Tough, Tough grader. Do the reading because he will call on you, especially if you look like you don't know what's going on. Takes attendance every day and penalizes heavily for absences

What you put into Balmuth's class you will get out of it.He's demanding, but if you show genuine interest&put forth the effort, you will be rewarded.A very intimidating man in class but always understanding of extenuating circumstances if you prove yourself. If you love a challenge, take Balmuth. If not, do the rest of the class a favor &stay out!

Horrible. Humiliates students. Arrogantly takes at least 5 extra minutes each class. Gives unhelpful comments on assignments. Don't talk to yourself into liking the class just because it's hard, there are so many great professors who can teach you so much without making the experience utterly miserable.

Do you like being randomly called on? Unable to go to the bathroom even if you feel like you're going to faint? Starting class 5 minutes early and ending 10 minutes late? Then Balmuth is the guy for you. You'll learn as much from the textbook as you'll learn from him. Fascinate him by reciting a statement you read in the textbook and voila! a C-!

A great professor:) He kept the discussions rolling and the class was never boring. And, yes, you need to read the material - so get over it! After all, you're paying a premium to attend Colgate and get an education. So don't blame Prof. Balmuth if you're whimping out and just squeaking by . . .

When he criticizes students for going to the bathroom things jump from efficient to antiquated really fast. Just an unhealthy, critical atmosphere that happens to sit best with the worst people.

Professor Balmuth is by far the best professor I have ever had at Colgate. I never fall asleep in his class for fear of being called on...and this also made me do the reading. On top of all of this, his humor is the best, and so are his baseball caps and when he gets chalk onhisface anddoesn'tknow

You can't beat him! The passion this man brings to teaching every day is second to none, and with Balmuth it is always a great day for Philosophy. I also love his sweaters and hats. Not only can he teach you about how to think like a philosopher, but also how to dress like one. We heart Balmuth!

Students who complain about professor Balmuth expecting them to do reading assignments and know the assigned material should perhaps consider not taking classes- that way nothing would be expected of them. if you don't do the work, you should expect to look foolish. this seems logical.

All the comments are probably true - most of all that you will appreciate his class even years later. I loved his class and probably deserved anything he dished out. Do the work he assigns and pay attention, probably won't have any problems.
