There is no doubt that this class is difficult, but if you put in the work it is manageable. Everything you learn in this class you will use in the field. Dr. Guan is an incredible professor and really knows his stuff. Exams and assignments are tough and frustrating but you will learn so much.

CIS 310 was by far the best class taken with Dr. Guan. It is tough, but it is absolutely worth it. Don't skip class and spend a lot of time on his assignments. Doing so will help on the tests.

Dr. Guan is indeed the best Professor I have had at UofL. If you put the time into learning all the concepts in his class, you will come out of the class ready and prepared to work for an employer. DO NOT SKIP CLASS! If you miss a class, you will pretty much be lost for a while.

Dr. Guan is probably my favorite professor I've had at UofL. He really challenges you which in turn teaches you a ton. He also cares about his students more than a lot of other professors. His class is hard but you will learn more in here than anywhere else. He also crack the best jokes and his 'Life Lessons' are actually inspirational (and funny).

I'm not going to sugar coat it, this class was pretty difficult. Guan is the type of professor who will help you only when you've actually tried everything you possibly can and then some. He truly cares about his students and I actually looked forward to his lectures. I didn't have one class where he couldn't make me laugh, awesome professor.

Professor is helpful and nice. Very approachable in and out of class. Has a dry sense of humor and likes to keep things interesting. I believe it was his first semester teaching the subject and overall I enjoyed the class. If you do the homework, cases, and study the chapters in the book you'll do fine. Very understanding and wants you to do well.

Comment:
Quite possibly the worse class I've taken in college. Professor teaches little but makes the tests EXTREMELY difficult. He talks more about how difficult the exams and class will be rather than actual teaching. Class is extremely difficult and makes an otherwise interesting subject very tedious and boring. Take someone else if you can.

Excellent instructor! He will make you think and understand database design. The class starts easy and it gets pretty hard at the end. The final test is very long (13 pages) and difficult...be ready!, I will never forget that day. And his name is Jian Guan not Jeff Guan.

The class is hard, there is no way around that. Professor Guan is a tough professor, and at times during the semester you will be frustrated with him, but at the end of the semester you will realize how much you have learned. Professor Guan is a good guy, but tough professor.

Class is very hard. He likes to assign complicated problems for homework, and add to them, making them even more complicated. Somewhat useful in office hours - if you have a Ph.D level of understanding of Databases. Nice guy though, just a really hard class, with hard material.

very good. He knows what he's talking about, his workload for 310 is large and the tests are ridiculous but the class is worth taking and there's no way you'll take this class and not learn something useful.

Very smart professor. Dry sense of humor. Helpful. Make sure to review material before he lectures about it because he does not always explain the concepts but he does explain how they work together. Assignments and test are difficult but you will learn a lot.

Database Security. This class is a joke. you spend the first 3 weeks learning stuff you need to know and the remaining time is busy work. you will have to do a 10 page single spaced report + presentation and numerous 2-4 page single spaced reports that you will never need to know. this class doesn't deserve a 3 hour or a 400 level rating.

Great Professor! if you cannot handle his amount of work or teaching style, Quit CIS because its all like this. There's two types of people in the business school CIS students and the rest, if you can't handle his class, CIS is not meant for you.

Dr. Guan is a good guy, but not so great of a teacher. He is funny, but tends to go off on tangents of his drinking experiences. His tests are extremely difficult and usually require complete, full understanding of the material to get a 'B'. You literally have to have taught him to get an 'A' on an exam. his english is very good.

Very hard tests. Hard, time consuming assignments. Great at teaching the material but goes overboard on tests. Available for help and decent about getting back to you in a fair amount of time. Has a helpful forum thread on blackboard.

Speaks dryly but is actually quite funny. Available after class. Well verse in the field of computers, years of "real-world" experience. I recommend him, one of the better professors at UofL.
