One of the best professors I've ever had. Amazing ability to synthesize a huge array of influences and experiences in and out of the art world and promote thinking across disciplines. Art has never been this interesting. Lectures left me pondering the topics discussed all week long. He obviously loves his job and it shows.

Easily the best professor I had at SMFA. I left SMFA my freshman year...but ended going back to finish there. Jim was certainly a reason I felt I could/should go back.

It's a bit intimidating to talk to someone who knows exactly everything about art history, but he takes the edge off with modesty and kindness, and has a very positive attitude. His lectures ramble a bit, and the reading list is 20 lb, but you can wing that, if your final project is on target. Projects are nerve racking but worth it. AstoundingClas
