Comment:
McCalla is a really hard grader. Even though there is no requirement of prior music knowledge, the research for writing essays is all very complicated and goes far beyond the scope of the class. I would not take the class if you haven't taken tonal analysis because your essays are going to be meaningless and you'll get a bad grade.

Great teacher, wonderful lectures. If you like listening to music, his classes are great. Unfortunately its not the only thing you can do. Tests are challenging if you dont pay attention. Take notes and you will do very well. Awesome class.

I had some trouble with concepts and he didn't seem to care in any way. He's egotistical and unapologetically rude.

Impossible as this is to believe of a college professor, McCalla grades on favorites. I had a 100, then I turned in a song that was worth an exam and I had spent hours on, and for two mistakes i got a B-. He doesn't stick to the syllabus at all. and if you try to talk to him outside of class he can be rude.

He is a great professor and I loved his class. The material was quite easy for me because I have a musical background, but he is always willing to help if you need it. He makes sure you understand the material, and he takes suggestions that you will give pertaining to his teaching methods. I strongly recommend the professor and this class!

McCalla knows his jazz! Take a jazz history class; even if you know a good deal about the genre going in, you'll be amazed at what new things you'll learn. I had him as an independent study advisor, and that was a lot of fun. Our weekly meetings sounded like two friends discussing their favorite musicians. I have very good memories of those times.

i already loved classical music when i began his class, but my desire to explore as many styles and composers began in earnest with mccalla's french music 1830-present class. Really a wonderful person. And Pelleas remains my favorite opera.

One word: hip. He'll be back in fall 2005 - make sure to take one of his classes then, if you're still here.

Cool prof, he lets you call him Jim c'mon. His classes aren't particularly difficult, but they're not really easy either. Don't take him if you're looking to slack off entirely, but if you know anything about music it's fairly easy.
