Comment:

Toner isn't your average professor. He makes an effort to get to know every single student and makes his classes fun! If a student were to miss a class, it would feel like you missed an entire week of that class, so try to show up. There is a ton of reading and with some books, it felt rushed. Overall it was fun, but hard work to keep a good grade.

Jim is an amazing professor. I always looked forward to coming to class. The bonds you make and the things you learn really open you to the world. The class is an amazing experience and I can't say enough about the way he teaches. You are always engaged and active!

This was a really fun class! I learned so much within one semester. It is a very hands on class, but it is done in a way that you don't even realize you're learning. Expect a lot of homework, but he is a fair grader, keeps office hours, and answers emails quickly. I would take it again!

Jim Toner is a dedicated professional. He has ample office hours and responds to emails. Best English Professor at Columbia college. Very interactive with students. No text books, but we were required to read three assigned books.

Toner is the best English teacher I ever had. He is a one of a kind character and his class is truly unique. I loved every minute of his class and would take him again. He is so passionate about his job and loves his students. He wants to see each person succeed.

you have to come to class every time. his quizzes are easy if you do the assigned readings his tests are easy if you do the assigned readings not like your normal English professor... he's much cooler!!!! would take him for any English class really.... he's that good He's also super helpful with anything you need!!!!

This class isn't for the 'i'll-just-sit-in-my-chair-and-take-notes crowd. This is an extremely interactive and FUN class. Lots of reading. Lots of papers. But, a great experience. Highly recommended.

I took this class this summer, and wasn't sure what to expect! I found my passion for writing again. He's the sort of professor that really cares about his students, and I would recommend this course (and this professor) to anyone who loves to write and read!

Let me just tell you that Jim Toner is not your typical English teacher. Mr. Toner is one of the best teachers I've had. He makes sure you're involved in the class and he takes time to give feedback to every one of his students. He's not afraid of a large workload so you shouldn't be either! I would recommend attending class because there's quizzes

Horrible! Had this professor a year or so ago and didn't know about rate my professor or I would have done this a long time ago. Take this teacher if you want a massage train with strangers (uncomfortable) but don't take it if you want to have a good experience.

Taking this class over the summer is difficult. It's normally about 10 hrs a week in a regular semester, but it's compacted to about 20 hrs. over the shorter summer. It is worth it, but be prepared for more work over the summer!

Jim Toner is a great teacher. He is a little odd, but he does do a good job of helping the student understand English. A great upside is he makes the class fun and interesting. If you want a traditional English class, however, then I would not recommend Toner. If you want fun, interesting, and new, then I definitely recommend Toner.

This is the best class I have taken. My writing improved more than I ever thought it could. Toner creates a welcoming atmosphere and forces you to go outside your comfort zone to have the most fun possible. I am taking 3 of his classes this semester because he rekindled my love for reading and writing. TAKE HIS CLASS.

He was a nice teacher to start out with on your first class of the day and for a first semester. i wish he could have been more clearer on the final. one thing that you need to be aware of is that he tries to be your friend first before being a teacher. i had fun times in his class and some weird times. i did pass the class though.

he is an interesting teacher but I got A's and B's on all the papers I did and because of the two books we read that I got behind on I received a C in the class... our final paper that was worth the most I received an A on so I wasn't sure how that worked.

Professor Toner is inspiring, funny, positive, and hilarious. Every class is a fun mixture of class traditions and new/spontaneous excitement. Toner laughs at himself and encourages his students to do the same. He is passionate about literature and art in general, and works hard to expose his students to the joy behind it rather than the monotony.
