McFarland can come off as biased but it doesn't come from a bad place, she's very passionate about what she teaches. She does an amazing job at taking classical economics and analyzing it with the texts she uses. She's a very knowledgable individual and I definitely would recommend her.

This course expanded my world. Great readings, lectures, docs & discussions. Professor McFarland treats the material with great sensitivity, and her discussions provoke introspection and growth. Loved it! As long as you keep up with readings and assignments you'll come away from this course greatly enriched. Prof very accessible!

Excellent! In my 5 years at UNB I kept going back to STU for more of Professor McFarland's courses. Her Intro economics course should be required for all econ students - the juxtapositioning of political economy with classical economics answers so many questions usually ignored. If you're looking for growth, you'll find it here. Very supportive!

Joan isn't a bad prof and is very enthusiastic about the material. She's somewhat approachable. Lectures are quite biased, and she often summarizes the material from the text. As long as assignments are completed and you at least pretend to be interested, you'll be fine.

Here are some tips I learned in the class:-sitting in the back sucks because she speaks in a low voice and sometimes fragmented sentences. -the best thing you can do for yourself is read all the handouts. Trust me. -if you approach her, she actually has some interesting things to say -the things she says in her lectures help with future papers

Joan McFarland's intro class is the worst. She is boring and only tells you exactly what's out of the book-which makes going to class pointless, but it's mandatory. Do not take a class with Joan McFarland.

I have taken a few courses with Joan and realized that though she may be well intentioned she is extremely biased. Even girls notice how she snaps at guys sometimes. I often feel like I should have known the material before I took the course instead of learning it as we go. On the up side Joan is her own original person who is passionate.

Just not my style. She spoke too lowly and she was extremely biased- but not to the point that she would admit it.

Do not take this womans class if you can avoid it! Our tests were brutal, her textbook was useless, yet she treats it like the Bible - and it's only a workbook! Get yourself a tutor if you want any hope of passing the class is my only advice.

Whatever you have to do to not take a course with this woman, do it! Horrible, horrible, horrible. The entire class does terribly on tests, and when we tell her we don't get it she "doesn't understand why we find it so hard because it's very basic material." Maybe if your multiple choice questions weren't in a foreign language, we'd be alright.

Prof. McFarland's Perspectives on Underdevelopment course is amazing. You'll learn a world and expand your thinking - if you don't mind reading and writing a lot, take it! Her intro course is also interesting and pretty easy (it's the only intro course that includes political economy!). Be prepared for group work and class participation...

Definatly one of the worst profs I have ever had. Our class was a discussion class, but she made everyone afraid to answer. Anything we said she either told us was incorrect or "what do you mean by that". Cannot approach her outside the class either. She was always right, and we were her worthless and pathetic students

Wow, she looks like beatle juice...she likes to ask really technical questions in front of class and likes for you to know that she knows more then you in the subject. All in all I don't like her bad moods and her want for you to know the whole text book by heart.

She definately does not like men. I'm a girl and it was very obvious that she favored the girls. Her class was easy though and she doesn't grade hard. If anything, her wardrobe is hilarious!

She is definately the worst prof I've had in the Econ. department. Her class was definately the worst I've ever taken. She expects too much from her students and enjoys making her multiple choice quizzes hard by making us "explain answers". She cant use an overhead and is SO frusterating!! just DONT
