Joanne B was the reason I switched to Art History as my major. She's passionate, intelligent, kind and hard. I found a great job in art and think of her often with great affection. Hated her tests, enjoyed writing assignments. I think I took all her classes and loved every one.

Bernstein is super boring. Like can't learn or listen for the life of me boring. Western Art is an intro class and she really hasn't graded me hard at all, I will get an A even though I haven't listened or done the reading. I just study and read before the exams because she gives a study guide.Art history students would like her more than studio

I used to dread giving presentations because Joanne would grill me on everything. She ripped my papers to shreds. My writing improved a lot because of her. She will be very helpful if you express interest. She loaned me a few books and let me tag along at the Cal library. She's tough but in a good way.

So, JoAnne is awesome if you are totally interested in the Renaissance or female nudes in art. But, if you're not it's probably best to steer clear. She's a good professor but better if you're actually into her field.

She is an amazing person, passionate, with lots of knowledge about her field. However, her tests are entirely subjective-you just feather your way through to an A. She is one of the reasons why I think art historians are really full of hot air!
