He is by far.... the best and funniest professor at Ramapo. Hands down! Take him even if you have to change your schedule. You will not be let down. Super easy-going and simply an amazing guy. Has interesting discussions, but the class is too simple and just easy. He talks about anything and ties it to lectures. Only one paper and you get an easy A

A pseudo-intellectual with a strong pro-black perspective. Presents himself as a laid-back, fun-loving guy. That being said, Prof. Johnson is fundamentally either a nice person or too lazy to confront people or enforce any standards. Easy A.

I had Joe Johnson in 1974 back when Ramapo first got going. He taught poetry, we used a little book titled FORMS which I've tried to get my hands on since but seems to be of print. I liked his class. It was an easy A, but I also remembered that the teacher encouraged us to be creative without having to worry. Great for the arts, prob not for Math.

He's a gift to this college from the beyond. Truly. It's not a class, it's an experience without any narrow limitations. He encourages you to think in non-traditional, expansive ways which is ultimately both rewarding and enriching in ways few other classes have been. Do yourself a favor, and sign up for his class. He's supreme.

Intelligent, thoughtful, and very relaxed. Teaches very differently, class is very easy and not rigidly structured by any means, but overall seemed like kids learned as much as would in many other classes which are much more structured, demanding, and unpleasant.

his quotes are infamous. laid back class style, but a lot of work. you only get what you put into it. if you dont participate in class you'll be lost. keep notes and youll be fine on the 50 page paper. if you like to think and write creatively, take this class.

Great professor. You only get what you put into in his class. I doubt all these negative reviews ever engaged in a conversation or discussion in class. You can take the class wherever you want it to go and you can learn a hell of a lot about other students. He has a great sense of humor and is very intelligent. He just does things differently.

Greatest Professor ever! very interesting class discussions, one long paper at the end of the semester but very little if any other work. Very chill and easy to talk to. Very nice happy guy. Lets you think for yourself. He was very laid back with attendance but i found myself actually wanting to go to class. Definitely take his class, he's the man!

I disagree w/ the comment saying you need to be black. I took Black Odyssey. From day 2, 99% of the black kids stopped showing up, figuring on this. They didn't get As. I think he even failed a few. Make sure he knows you, speak up, do the bare minimum for the paper, and you're good. I'm so white I'm almost see through, and I got an A.

I have taken a number of Joe's classes. and i am really upset with all the poor ratings he has been getting. the only way i see it even a posibility to not do well in a class of Joe's is to not have the willingness to learn. Sure the man sometimes strays off topic, from the books he assigns but common people life isnt always by the book either.

guy thinks he's socrates but he's far from it. Doesn't teach you a damn thing, just some bull*&^% about his own life, but nothing from the text. he thinks he's outside the system but he's just storking his own ego. he's probably stupid and just covers up his lack of knowledge with small talk which is all he seems capable of doing.

Johnson gave me an F, ignored my phone calls and emails when I tried to see why I got an F. It later turned out he LOST my 100 page paper I actually spent the time writing all semester. He showed no remorse for putting me through hell about this paper. His class is a waste. He doesn't care that he does absolutely nothing, he has tenure.

Ok. So summer classes are usually long and strenuous and terrible. Joe Johnson has made my first class at ramapo a joy. This is a guarented A. He moved the class to start an hour later than it was supposed to. Then he ends class an hour early. After giving us our work (a ten page paper) we talk about everything from music to what makes him horny.

He's an effin wack job. The entire school plagarizes and copy and pastes his infamous 100 page papers and get A's, and he failed my roommate...too weird. Plus, he still hasn't given me a grade and a graduated a week ago. Basically, if you don't play basketball, don't bother with this class.
