I'm glad I took this as my FYS. A lot of the learning you do for him is self-guided, and the lectures for the FYS were less about material and more about application. He is hilarious and really easy to talk to. He's not the easiest to get a hold of (and his office isn't the easiest to find) but once you do, it's totally worth it.

I'm really glad I took mineralogy, but it was really a struggle for me. It got better when I took petrology.

This class has changed my perspective on learning. I observe, identify features, and form my own ideas. In many other classes, teachers penalize students for being "wrong'', but Professor Brady teaches us that it's okay to make mistakes-- as long as they are supported by careful thought and evidence. This is empowering beyond belief.

The geology FYS was very fun and interesting, plus the field trips every week were awesome. John is such a sweet person, he'll make you think for yourself though, don't expect him to preach all his knowledge to you.

Brady's the best- this was the most fun class I took my first semester. It's one of Smith's best-kept secrets. He has a very unique teaching style- you go in totally blind the first class, and he asks you to make logical guesses about what's going on at the sites instead of just feeding everything to you.

John has a very distinct teaching style, you either plunge into the subject for yourself using him as a guide, or you trudge along in agony. He's very kind and patient, but for some people he's just not a good fit. At times it feels like he requires students to read his mind. But he's always around!

This was a GREAT class, and JB is a great professor! His style - making you figure it out for yourself with no textbook knowledge - can be frustrating, but he's very approachable and happy to help you understand. A really fun class; you'll develop a true appreciation for rocks.
