Worst prof I've ever had. Didn't even mention the exams once. Doesn't use the textbook at all and his lectures are all over the place. No clear explanation of what's expected. Hates electronics of any kind and will kick you out if you use them. Never take a course with this prof.

He's interesting to listen too which in turn makes the class easier to follow. He hates electronics of any kind. Study for his tests as their harder than what most people think.

Great professor, genuinely interested in the material and it shows in lecture! From day one he states that it will not be an easy course which is true and attendance is mandatory. Course material is very interesting for a written requirement.

Drop out of his class if you still can. I taken his class and my GPA dropped because of his difficult tests and poor explaination. He's a tough marker and doesn't allow computers in the class room. I don't recommend this prof.

horrible prof. doesnt want you to use a computer to take notes, ranted about the subject with no clear agenda about with he was talking about, did not follow the textbook whatsoever and had tests on the most minor details of such a broad topic that he hardly talks about in class (you're expected teach yourself?) get another prof for west civ.

The course material is very interesting, but he isn't clear at some points. I am a more visual learner and I have difficulty in his course . I don't recommend if you are a visual learner or don't want to face a HUGE challenge! This course is interesting, but extra reading is required!

Super friendly if you go to his office hours, quite intimidating in class. Hard class, but he is clear that it is not going to be easy from day one. You don't need the textbook for the essays, you can use library books to find info. Good note taking of his class is a necessity. Don't take for an easy class. It's fine, but you have to work for it.

Bad prof, tests are on the small details, and from old lectures. Way to high of an expectation for basic facts of Western Civilization. Avoid taking a class with this prof.

Has very high expectations, there are 6 tests and 1 final and all are accumulative. Hardest class I've ever taken. Not for people that aren't interested in history.

When i dropped, the class of 30 had already dwindled down to 8 students left. He's an absolute horrible prof. not only does he make you hand write all the notes, he does not specify what to write down and goes on and on! What you write down isnt even what youre tested on and he does not teach with textbook. horrible prof. never take his class.

Best pure lecturer I''ve had at the U of M there is a lot of material to be covered but if you attend class regularly and take decent notes you''ll be fine. Very dry sense of humour. Posts nothing online. Tests all include a short answer portion and an essay portion which require some knowledge of the textbook material in order to do well.

I dropped this course after a week, thats how bad it was for me. I suggest not taking this course with him unless you write really fast and love to write essays. Just not my style of learning. Love his accent though

Horrible prof. the classes do not follow the textbook at all, and all of the lectures have no relation to any of the tests. subjects are vague and unclear, must hand write everything, and impossible to find material on test subjects. never take a class with this prof. EVER.

Tough class, but totally worth it if you're interested in history. Prof is a fantastic lecturer, does follow the key terms he puts on the board.Beyond that there are no notes so you MUST be in class. Lots of chances to ask questions. However the essays are difficult and need lots of prep, and results depend a lot on the marker.Must make word count!

Brillant man but his expectations for his first year students are too high. The terms he puts on the board is what you have to know. Lazy and gets someone else to mark the essays. if you dont get in the range of 750 words you are automatically -5 marks. final is worth 60% which is ridiculous for first yr. if you can take a diff prof.

Attendance is mandatory in his class for the notes are not presented in anyway or written on the board. He just gives the key words and talks about each! It was like an oral history class! Be attentive on what's he's going to say, though he repeats them when you ask. Tests were cumulative so you need to do well in each to supplement the final exam!

Great teacher, hard class as it's cumulative. Final exam worth 60% of final mark so beware. Final exam wasn't terribly difficult however.
