Usually I love classes were we do no work and just a few journals and essays, but NOT this one. The entire class, he speaks in the same tone and the entire class is so quiet. The plus to taking his class is I can be on my computer doing OTHER class work or on my phone since he doesn't care and there is nothing important being discussed

John Gourlie is someone that I hope every student has the pleasure of taking at least once. He is in the rare breed of professors that actually teach you how to think and not what to think. I never thought I could receive so much wisdom from just a seminar class, but he exemplifies it. I wish I had known about him earlier, but now I am graduating.

I'm not really sure what this class is about but I enjoyed it a lot! Professor Gourlie is a lot of fun to talk with in and out of class and often shows movies and talks about current events (mostly Trump). But definitely take this class if you're a communications student.

You watch a lot of movies and have chats about philosophy. If you're open-minded, you'll probably learn a lot, but not what you'd expect to learn. It's a really chill and fun class. He really cares about what the class is interested in and what you want to do.

I love this man. You are making a huge mistake if you do not take his class. I had him for First Year Seminar, and it was amazing. I am the only person I know that enjoyed FYS because of Gourlie. He is hilarious, laid back, interesting. We watch movies and talk about abstract things, and dont really do serious work. I miss him.

Watch movies, meditate, the class can tell him what they want to do. Few journals due, one page, about things you like. Occasional 4 page essays about important memories, so they're easy to write. He'll give you an A as long as the writing is meaningful. Pretty sure he's high all the time, but it's hilarious.

Professor Gourlie is the best!! Easy grader and interesting assignments. We watched movies in class more than we read the assigned textbooks.

I love the "hot" question for Gourlie. If you're into Welsh hippie-trolls, I suspect. I was at the Q in the early 90's and the class was public speaking. We had more fun than ridin' a greased pig. I think Gourlie liked me more 'cuz I was the only person within 50 miles from south of the Mason/Dixon. This guy exemplifies the Q.U. experience!

His class is like none other. It is the easiest class you will ever take; and you watch lots of great movies during the semester as well as write 'stories' rather than 'reports.' Gourlie attempts to lecture but ends up ranting and going off topic for the full class time. Would recommend for an easy A.

When you first meet him, you think he's crazy or completely nuts. But he does get you thinking if you take the time to just listen and come in with an open mind. Although his ramblings are rarely relevant, class is interesting and you may rethink things you thought you knew before.

I graduated from QC in 97 and it took me over ten years to realize just how wonderful Professor Gourlie is as a teacher. He prepares you for "the real world" in that he encourages you to think. A wonderful man. An excellent teacher. I consider him one of the finest men I have had the honor of knowing.

In both media history and junior sem, he managed to tie in the class topic very strongly with philosophies on living. He's the only professor who has given me something I know I can use later in life. He really makes you think and presents some interesting theories. Highly untraditional and an easy grade. I loved meditating outside!

He is out of the box. He is non-traditional and at the time I thought he was on crack. But 8 years later, his class is one of the ones I still talk and think about. If you pay attention (just a bit) he'll get you thinking about stuff in strange ways. One of the simplest questions he got me to ask myself is: "what is important to you?" He wasn't really a media professor as much as a "living" professor.

I took him for Chocolate and Roses....in 2004. He's a bit out of the box...but in all honestly he'll have you seeing things a bit differently. He makes you think out of the norm..which was wonderful.
