Very difficult class but I would gladly take it again with Professor Hassell. He was available outside of class to receive questions, which was very helpful. Be warned, this class takes an ungodly amount of time to get a B.

The class was tough, but with Professor Hassell's study outline it became more manageable. His lectures were interesting and the excitement that he has for the accounting profession is contagious. I studied about 20 hours for each exam along with keeping up with in class work. If you work in the class you can do well.

The people complaining here about this professor have to be the ones that expect to put in 0 effort. Expect to actually work for a grade in this class. I'd take this professor for A312 rather than any other professor at IUPUI.

A312 is a very, very, very tough class. John makes it quite enjoyable. He makes his one note packet which you guys do together in lectures. Uses a bell curve grading system. I got a 50ish% on first exam which was curved to an 80%. I studied quite a bit for his exams. He's an awesome professor and a huge wealth of knowledge. 10/10 recommend.

Passionate professor, but focuses on the reasoning behind the accounting instead of dissecting his problems. study his class notes for the tests

He has a lot of potential to be a good professor (he is very quick to help when you ask), but I don't find him the easiest to learn from. He was confusing and the class itself is overwhelming. I felt like I was being talked down to a lot (even though this was not his intent). My biggest piece of advice to him is to talk about students more equal

He is an incredibly smart person when it comes to accounting; he has 2 PhD's, but a horrendous professor. Knowing material and being able to teach it are two different things. Doesn't answer questions when asked, makes at least 2 or 3 mistakes per lecture confusing students further than they already are. Do not recommend. Nice enough guy though.

He is a good professor. I had very little accounting background prior to taking this Kelley Direct class. I found that if you follow his detailed study schedueld, the repetition gets you prepared for the exam without too much cramming. You have to get into a study routine. There is a TON of material, and the class in general is hard. He does a good job answering questions in class and in emails. He is not that bad if you do the work and readstay ahead. He is detailed oriented (its accounting...I would expect nothing less) so expect a 16-page syllabus. Dont let that sacre you though, keep up with the reading, do the practice problems and quizzes, graded hw and READ his NOTES. I'm on track to get an A.

What makes a good teacher is not simply knowledge of material, but his/her ability to convey that knowledge and structure lesson plans that aid student comprehension. On this front, he fails miserably. You can tell he's an overall well-meaning dude who knows accounting, but when it comes to actually teaching, he is completely inept. DO NOT TAKE!

Class was worthless. I taught myself everything outside of class. When students expressed concerns, he was defensive and seemed not to care. He grades tough, and takes months to get homework grades back. I heard him complaining about the students right outside the classroom. May be good for upper level accounting classe

Taking class with this guy is one worst nightmare. Doesn't explain the concept very well in class. Goes very broad on what we should do in the test. Doesn't email back to you. Doesn't like question!! What a burden for IUPUI.

The BEST accounting professor I've had. Not only does he write his own notes for the class, but his instructions are crystal clear. I didn't even touch the required textbook, but his course notes allowed me to get a B+ in his class. He is an amazing professor and WILL help you understand accounting as long as you show up to his classes.

Excellent professor. I graduate this December and he is the BEST accounting professor I have had at IUPUI. He cares about teaching the material and does an excellent job. It is a difficult class but he makes it so you can understand the material. The exams are not multiple choice but problems to work. DEFINITELY take him!!

Phenomenal professor. I've almost completed the MSA program, and he is by far the best professor I've had at IUPUI. Professor Hassell lives and breathes accounting and has a true passion to share it with students. I wish I could have taken him for more classes.

Great professor. Teaches the material but doesn't "teach the book". Tests are difficult, but are a better representation of real life work, which more classes need. I disagree that the tests will blidside you. The person who said that also said they were never prepared for class, go figure. Not enough room to say all the good things.

Comment:
Hassell basically just goes over problems in his class. He expect everyone to come prepared (nobody does), and just jumps right in with practice problems. His tests are sadistic, but he grades with a huge curve. A 50% is a B+. The test questions are always stuff that you've never seen in the book or in class, so its a bit of a blindside.
