Much better at classes in his S-Asian specialty; picks favorites, but generally supportive otherwise--very helpful outside of class. VERY helpful adviser. Only take him for seminars! I can't even imagine staying awake in a lecture. Still, he's a very interesting individual with an interesting perspective. A good guy to know. For sure.

Amazing Prof. One of the best/my favorites at Bowdoin. Incredibly, well informed and helpful on papers/projects/whatever. One of the reasons I'm a religion major. You WILL learn in his classes (well unless you suck)

I love this man. He is alway clear, always helpful, and always stimulating. I knew nothing going in and left the class a religion major

I got good grades on papers, but Holt was totally condenscending and continuously shot down my in-class statements. In order to get good grades, students must simply summarize Holt's lectures in class--no independent thinking allowed.

One of the most well-read people I know. And a great professor--although much better in smaller classes.

Rather dry and boring, but a nice guy nonethless. I bearly do work and still manage to do well. I'd imagine he would be better in smaller classes soley dedicated to his specialty of east-asian religions.

Not the best teacher. If you want to take an hour and a half nap 2 days a week take this class. The worst presentation skills out of any teacher I have ever had (including elementary school).

easy grader and he definitely knows his subject incredibly well. however in a large class (like 101) his classes really drag.... still, i never paid attention, barely read the books and pulled off A- on all my papers......

Professor Holt was a condescending snob. He shot down students in class, had boring, unclear lectures, and a number of non-pc statements. Don't take him unless you want to be offended very often.
