Horrible teacher. You basically have to teach yourself. He flies through the lectures by showing a program that he writes by hand, sometimes messing it up, and expects you to teach yourself the rest of the lesson by reading or by online practice. Is extremely tough grader and will seek to make students fail. Bad teacher and overall bad person.

Terrible. Stay away at all costs unless you are a computer wizard before the class. If you are lacking with computer knowledge, he acts like he is better than you in a way. He has that smirk that just doesnt hit home with me

Terribly unfair grader. Very tough about what he considers "plagiarism" and will give you negative grades on assignments. If you don't want to get "caught" then don't work with anyone else, even with minor similarities and explanations that you worked together will get you negative points. He does not teach what is on the exam or projects.

Comment:

Impatient and short-tempered. Professionalism is not always reciprocated. I already have a year of programming experience before college, so I don't find the material difficult... yet. However, the difficulty might be interacting with the professor himself. You can learn programming on the internet from a supportive, informed community for free.

Knows a lot about the subject and he loves teaching. The weekly programs are a pain and he doesn't give much help to do the programs. The weekly quizzes are not bad. Tests are a little tough but most people pass. He seems to get mad if you ask him for too much help on the programs though... Overall he is a good guy but he could improve.

Hey barely teaches! He goes to fast to understand what is going on and you end up just writing a lot without knowing much about it. He thinks everyone knows the stuff just as well as him and expects you to be able to do the hw and projects on your own. Way to picky and will take off a lot of points for the smallest things.

He's helpful and explains things if you don't quite get it. The class is very boring. The tests and quizzes are easy if you study since they are multiple choice and student's write the questions, but the projects and labs are inconsistent and he'll find any little thing to nail you on, even if it's right but he doesn't like what you chose.

Dr Koch is an excellent professor if you simply do your work. He gets a bad rap for being tough but I've never had to study and still done extremely well. Do the work and pay attention in class and you'll do well- he's also a really interesting guy to talk to outside of class and is always in his office when you need him.

I've never had Dr. Koch for cs115 which he seems to get horrid ratings for, but as for cs125, I can attest to the fact that he is an excellent professor. Koch is awesome! He somehow became one of my favourite professors. Despite what other people say about his CS 115, CS 125 is different--we make the questions for the quizzes and tests! Some of the programs are hard, but they're fun for those who are intested in CS. ^_^ Just wait until you get to bagels.py. =P And he may not look good in green. =P

I would recommend taking a 1st grader who knows nothing about computers to teach CS 115 rather than this man. What he taught had nothing to do with what was on his tests. I would study my butt off for 3-4 hours and would end up with a 64 because nothing he taught was on the test. Don't take this professor.
