Extremely knowledgeable and tirelessly works to make sure you understand the core themes of the Byzantine Empire's lengthy history. 114B is not at all easy, it is a class for passionate history students who are willing to put in the time to get something out of it. His lectures are dramatic and funny, with both tragedy and comedy.

I had him in high school for ancient civ honors and he inspired my love for history. Every class is a story and it's amazing to listen to! I would definitely recommend taking whatever classes you can with him.

The best professor I have had the fortune to take at UCLA. He loves what he does, and that bleeds through every facet of the class; his lectures, even if you don't particularly care about Roman history, are geared to teach you moral or philosophical lessons. He is an example of how history can be taught engagingly, rather than as a dull chronology.

Great professor. Made class fun and interesting, if youre not good at listening and taking notes, dont take him, hes all about telling stories in his own words and there are no powerpoints. he hands out candy too! his course reader is actually really helpful and full of notes. Hes a very knowledgeble professor and i would def take him again!

Though he presents in a style heavy w/ adjective-fortified narrative, his enjoyment of the material is contagious and he gears things in such a way that students have every opportunity to succeed. He presents a deluge of information (of which if even a fraction is soaked up during his lectures a satisfactory grade should result for most students).
