He was a nice guy, and he tried. But now he's retired and long gone, and thank god! His class was the hardest thing ever to take, way too many slides. Also, his tests were HELL. Barely passed although I read (JK) and attended most/half of the lectures. Easy to cheat in his class though, he's blind.

I am not an arch major. I took the class to complete my international perspective and was extremely unsatisfied. The tests were way to hard. I took physics 221 the same semester as this class. I ended up studying twice as hard for arch222 and got a worse grade compared to physics 221. If you don't have to take this class DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SPEAK UP! I sit in the third row and it is so hard to hear him. His tests are too hard compared to what we learned in class. Sometimes I feel that the tests are to "Art" oriented rather than "Architecture" oriented. Somewhat difficult class. Sit in front, read the book, go to class, study and you should get an "A" if you put some effort into it.

He seems like a nice guy but man, his exams are way too detailed. I'm not an architecture major and I did okay in the class. You basically have to memorize what he says in lecture to get an A on any exam. He talks softly, too.

Un-charismatic, apathetic, pompous, haughty and on a high horse. Goes at a pace that only the top students can keep up with and has absolutely no mercy or acknowledgement of those who don't learn at the same, grueling rate.

This class was hard. I'm in the arch program and love arch history, but he teaches the material in the most boring way possible. I dont think he could talk any quieter. He shows way too many slides to make his points. the thing that upset me the most, he didnt include anything out of the book, so reading for extra help was all in vain.

Bad teacher, all of the test questions are extremely vague base on artistic perception. There are no facts in this class, its all opinion based. This class should only be taken by people who are required to take it. The instructor is very bias towards students that are not in his department. The class has way too much information on each test.

This class isn't too much fun. The material would be interesting if it wasn't taught in the most boring way humanly possible. Best sleeping pill I've ever taken. The tests are impossible to fail (you have to get lower than a 34 out of 102), but also impossible to get A's on. Have fun trying to memorize the specifics of 200+ slides for a test.

I Love Prof. Maves! He's VERY knowledgeable and seems to truly enjoy teaching us! This class DOES take work! but Maves is great at covering all test material clearly in class. COME TO LECTURE, take detailled notes, put some time into it and you'll be fine!

I didn't take 221, so it was a huge shock jumping into 222's workload. Probably one of the most difficult courses I've ever taken, but Maves is understandable and VERY knowledgeable - he knows whole cities like the back of his hand. In a lecture hall of maybe 250-300 students, he actually talked to me personally on more than one occasion.

Wonderful teacher. Speaks a little quite, so sit in the FRONT. Seriously, if you want a decent grade, sit in front and take detailed notes. Always makes his test out of 95 instead of 105 to help you out. This class WILL take work.

seems to be very good in small groups...was very impersonal in arch 221/222, but has a genuine concern for you as an individual if you approach him or are in one of his smaller classes. classes may get monotonous, but i found the class to be more useful than i originally anticipated

This guy is definitely a great professor. He is very intelligent and serious about what he does, and has a subtle sense of humor. I'm getting an A and didn't have to read half of the readings. If you actually pay attention in class, he makes concepts and facts very clear.
