One of my favorite professors at Trinity. He gets off topic very easily but always teaches you important stuff and very interesting topics. He loves what he teaches and I recommend him. He also ran for governor or some office position, this guys a genius.

Comment:

Mertens is a very good teacher. The key to success is to take the time to work through (and understand) the lengthy HW assignments. Make sure to ask questions during class and don’t let his occasional bearish outbursts deter you from seeking assistance. He is friendly and helpful during office hours.

Great professor, is very easy to get off track and lose his focus. Because of this he goes back and usually repeats most of what we did last class in his next class. Other than that, he does a great job explaining everything and I recommend him.

He is the worst professor i have ever had. He assign homework which he sometime doesn't know how to explain. he likes to make some unnecessary comments on your work. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!

Really good teacher, stay up to date with assignments and give yourself a good amount of time to do the work. dont ever save it for the last minute because it usually takes a while to understand the concepts. ask questions in class, especially about homework-he will be very helpful

Hard Professor, but fair. Does a good job presenting the material. Professor student interaction is sometimes demeaning or condescending. Does not show much care or respect his students. Good professor, less than good student teacher relations

He is a professor who does not waste class time to go over the homework. If he senses few people understand the difficult material he shows annoyance and little patience for students who would like more time in class to go over previous material. If students don't understand the material, he just marches forward and tells you to work harder.

Most of the work for class is hw problems. Make every attempt to show that you're keeping up with the work load (or at least act like you are). Tests are easy if you put the time in and are mindful of fine details. Mertens can sometimes go fast in lecture so ask plenty of questions.

He will work you like a dog and at the end of the semester he will give you a terrible grade no matter how well you do, just because he doesn't like you. If you are a girl, he will hit on you in front of the class and make you feel very awkward. The only way to graduate with honors as an engineer at this school is to suck up to him hardcore.

He is such a great professor that I actually looked forward to our 8:30 AM class. He is capable of explaining even the most complicated topics, making them understandable and even enjoyable. My advice: do the homework. He picks each and every problem carefully so that you learn as much as possible from as few problems as possible.

Had him just for lab professor, with Popovic for lecture. I will say this: he was teaching us more in a couple hours in the lab sometimes than she was in three class meetings a week. Very clear, but hard grader.
