I did enjoy this class with Professor Smith. He does tend to give a lot of content for a GE class but overall if one does all of the assignments he tends to appreciate that a lot (especially when things are turned in on time). Sometimes he even graded things himself as opposed to letting the TA just grade everything. He was helpful in office hours

This class is pretty easy and enjoyable if you put the time into it! Although there is a lot of work, it is manageable if you do a little bit each day. Take notes when he lectures and pay attention to what he tends to reiterate. The readings can be difficult to understand, but he doesn't really grade that much on accuracy and there's extra credit!

I took this course during summer and Im so happy i took this class. The professor didnt expect you to buy any books, which saved you money. Every material was on canvas which was so accessible. The class was honestly interesting as well, and I honestly have no bad words but ask you to take this class, very easy. do EC's and you'll get a high A

He makes attendance mandatory and is a boring lecturer. But everything else about his class is good. HW in the class is easy (short papers and take-home open-book online quizzes with unlimited time) and the midterm and final are both take-home (mostly writing essays similar to the HW ones). Discussion is mandatory but is once a week for an hour.

Definitely an easy cat. 4 GE. However, do expect a lot of assignments. Each week you're given on average one writing assignment (a page long paragraph double spaced) and a quiz that you do at your own time. These take time to do because you need to read certain texts that are provided. Midterm and final are take-home and easy-peezy. EXTRA CREDIT!!!

He is an amazing lecturer. It actually makes you interested in the material. And although there were lots of readings and some were pretty difficult, the writing assignments and quizzes for them were not difficult at all.

There are lots of homework assignments, but they are all graded very easily. Finals are take home. There were 10 writing assignments in the summer online class and many smaller ones. Overall I'd say the class and the readings very interesting. For the entire course however, I only watched the first few lectures and ended with over 100%.

Several readings a week, and a response about them or a quiz that were generally not bad. He is a good and really enthusiastic teacher, you have to go to class ( he has a sign in sheet) Extra credit assignments and OH makes the class easier , just pay attention! when you write answers for the midterm and final, you repeat what he said in lecture.

Very sweet professor and very easy/relaxing class to take if you are overrun with hard classes. You have a 1-2 page assignment due each week about the reading, you must post on the messageboard 6 times, and you must participate in class. Very easy to get an A in if you do those 3 things. I would recommend him to everyone.

He is a really great lecturer, and he tries really hard to get the class interested in the topic. His grading and the amount of work assigned is pretty fair, if you put in moderate effort you should get an A. Also, he gives a TON of extra credit so that's helpful too. I would definitely take a class with him again.

John Smith is INCREDIBLE. Very passionate about his subject, very friendly and helpful. His lectures are superb, and he encourages participation in such a way that even the most shy students in class are clamoring to put their two cents in. Heavy, HEAVY reading, but he explains everything very well. Take home midtermfinal, SHORT papers, quizzes.

Great professor, engaging material, excellent choice for the Humanities GE. He offered extra credit. HW was to write a 500 word assignment once a week, on interesting topics. This was my favorite class so far! Easy to get a good grade if you put in a reasonable amount of work, and enjoy the topic

Smith was great. Very insightful and thought-provoking. Workload and reading was a good amount, but manageable. Daily reading and weekly essays (which died down at the end) Make sure to know your German however before you enroll in one of his German courses. Don't listen to the negative comments below, Professor Smith is nothing like that.

This guy can make anything boring. Yes, anything and everything. I reread my favorite pieces of German literature and he managed to ruin it by boring it and focusing on all the dull topics. BOO THIS MAN. His lectures are so annoying. Just imagine a hyper professor lecturing on boring topic after boring topic. SNORE. He's a picky grader, too.

Totally disagree with previous. I took Smith for a year in a Humanities series and went on to take other courses afterwards (even German-language later with TAs). He has real insight, a great personality and is open to discussion. Can't explain the other posts but through bad feeling, no realization that prof is sometimes right and you wrong.

totally a agree with ya guy below me, this guy needs to get real, he's not even that insightful, bad a t amking conncections-his analysis is poor and rearely accurate- if you want to pass just right what he says in class, if you want to learn look at other literary critiques etc...

smith is totally intellectually arrogant. he is so set in his intellectual framework and refuses to see things other ways - he's convinced that he is right. the totally opposite of what an academic should be. this man needs to reevaluate what it means to have an academic discussion. PS he is SO full of himself-even though he's not that interesting.

I'm hoping this is John H. Smith. The only thing crazier than his hair is his teaching. His enthusiasm might freak you out at first, but once you get used to all the energy, man, is this guy one of a kind. I'm forever indebted to the man since he taught me Faust through many ages, languages, and cultures. Need I say more?
